Yesterday I was proud to celebrate increased access to lifesaving care with the expansion of University Medical Center New Orleans’ Cancer Center, which will bring more advanced treatment, research and specialized care to patients right here at home.

Congratulations to the entire University Medical Center and LCMC Health team on this important investment in our community, and a special thank you to Congressman Troy A. Carter for securing $2 million in federal funding to help make this critical expansion possible.

This afternoon, I joined community leaders in Tremé to honor a New Orleans legend and national civil rights icon, Jerome “Big Duck” Smith. We must do more than remember and celebrate his legacy, we must be inspired to act with the same sacrifice and courage he demonstrated in his day.

This morning’s sunrise reminds me how precious every day and every embrace truly is. I remain stunned and heartbroken by the passing of my dear friend, brother and colleague, Senator Larry Selders.

As we grieve this devastating loss, I am grateful for the countless lives Larry touched and the indelible mark he left on so many, including mine. Larry made this world better not only through his dedicated service in public office, but through the way he treated everyone with authentic love, kindness, and respect.

I am especially grateful for the time we shared serving together in both the House and the Senate. The constant laughs. The encouragement he provided in difficult moments. Those Monday nights at Bennie’s!! And I will forever be grateful that we had the chance to spend time and embrace one another this past weekend in New Orleans. I will cherish that time always.

Please join me in lifting up his wife, Kendra, and his sons, Larry and Luke, by praying for their comfort as they navigate this unimaginable loss. Larry had a way of bringing light into every room he entered. His legacy of service, compassion, and love for others will live on. Thank you, my friend, for allowing me to walk alongside you for part of your journey. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Sharing the stage with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, and the Native Land Podcast team at Essence made one thing clear: we can’t just vote and go home.

This moment is about the movement, the goals we’re fighting for, and the future we’re working to build. That future won’t happen by accident. It will be built by staying engaged, staying in the fight, and doing the work ourselves.

We have to be in this fight together!

Two hundred fifty years after declaring that all people are created equal, we’re still debating who gets to fully participate in our democracy.

The work of this generation is far from finished.

Grateful to have spent time at Spilling the Tea: From the Capitol to the Courtroom during Essence Fest weekend. During the conversation about voting rights, I joined Elizabeth Booker Houston, Ashley Shelton, Janai Nelson, and Demetria McCain to discuss what’s at stake and how we keep building power together.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, the question isn’t whether we’ve come a long way. It’s whether we’re willing to take the next step. Conversations like this one are how we take it.
