We cannot be discouraged in this moment.

SB 121 is a direct attack on our democracy and an attempt to weaken voices that fought too hard to be heard.

But we have overcome worse. Our ancestors endured slavery, Jim Crow, violence, and voter suppression. They organized, they fought, and they won.

The struggle continues. So do we.

Imagine spending well over $3 million in taxpayer dollars defending a rushed map, only for Republicans and the Callais plaintiffs to admit the maps are terrible.

Even South Carolina and Mississippi had the restraint to pump the brakes. Louisiana seems determined to win the race to the bottom.

As the House debates final passage of SB 121, I urge my colleagues not to hide behind the Callais decision. Let’s call this what it is: a deliberate and politically motivated effort, carried out at the direction of Donald Trump, to weaken fair representation and diminish the political voice of Black communities and Democrats in Louisiana.

They may win this vote today. But history has shown, time and time again, that those who fight to silence people and dilute their representation never win in the end.

More than just successful people, the world needs good people of courage now more than ever.

As we close out Memorial Day, take a moment to learn about the Louisiana Heritage Monument, a landmark dedicated to honoring the Black servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

The monument was established through legislation authored by Sen. Gerald Boudreaux and me in 2021 during the John Bel Edwards administration, ensuring that a too-often overlooked chapter of Louisiana’s military history is permanently recognized and celebrated. 🇺🇸

Again today, hundreds of constituents flooded the Capitol, making their voices impossible to ignore on the new Congressional maps.

Earlier this week, I joined Angela Rye to discuss this latest effort to disenfranchise voters and the testimony from Louisianans across the state rejecting these maps and the dark past they represent.

This is about more than just maps. It’s about control of economic centers and control of our democracy. This is about the ability for everyone to be able to participate in the voting process to ensure policies that will help or harm their families.

Make sure you roll to the polls today 🛼🛴! Polling stations close at 8PM, so there’s still time to make your voice heard.

Democracy dies long before the final vote. It dies the moment leaders stop caring whether the people are truly heard. But history has also shown that when ordinary people refuse to be silent, even the most powerful systems can be forced to change.
