Former Louisiana legislator Arthur Morrell delivered a warning to lawmakers during House & Governmental Affairs Committee last week.

“Don’t please the president. Please the people of your district.”

Morrell, who served 23 years in the Louisiana Legislature, said this fight is bigger than party politics.

“This is about character, integrity, and honesty.”

Louisianans deserve leaders who represent the people who sent them to Baton Rouge, not politicians chasing power.

While families struggle with healthcare costs, insurance premiums, poverty, and underfunded schools, politicians are dragging Louisiana backward into fights rooted in division instead of moving this state forward.

“We have to learn to share power because that’s what democracy is all about.” -

History remembers those who advanced democracy, not those who stood in the way of it.

This week, the Louisiana Senate unanimously passed the Caleb Wilson Act, legislation written in honor of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old student, member, and beloved son whose life was taken by hazing.

During debate on ’s bill, Senator honored Caleb’s family and spoke directly to the pain they continue to carry, reminding the chamber that “we cannot have any more families come and say why mine?”

The legislation strengthens hazing prevention education, accountability, reporting requirements, and enforcement measures to help ensure no other family has to endure this kind of loss.

The Louisiana Senate Democratic Caucus continues to keep the Wilson family in our prayers and stands with them in the fight to make sure Caleb’s legacy leads to change.

The Louisiana Senate Democratic Caucus commends for its reporting on the critical issues facing Louisianans with disabilities.

The civil rights of people with disabilities are not a matter of political debate — they are a matter of constitutional principle and moral obligation. Our Caucus remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the dignity, accessibility, healthcare, educational opportunity, and equal protection guaranteed to every Louisiana family.

For hours, Louisianans stood before the Senate committee and spoke from the heart about representation, fairness, and protecting their communities.

Black, white, Democrat, Republican, Independent. People came from across Louisiana to say they did not want to go backwards.

But after emotional testimony stretching late into the night, the proposed congressional map backed by Louisiana Republicans failed in committee.

Lt. General , veteran, a public servant, and a son of this state stood before lawmakers last week and reminded them that the, “ Supreme Court didn’t always get it right.”

This fight over representation is not abstract for many Louisianans. It brings back memories of a past people fought too hard to overcome.

Louisiana is culturally rich, deeply connected, and stronger together than politicians want us to believe. The people dancing together at festivals, gathering in small towns, and building community across every divide deserve fair representation and a democracy that moves us forward, not backward.

“I need you to understand what it feels like to stand here, to have walked through that mob as a child and to now watch elected officials do that same thing the mob was trying to do, just with better suits and parliamentary procedure.”

65 years after integrating New Orleans schools as one of the McDonogh Three, Leona Tate returned to testify against congressional maps that would dilute Black voting power in Louisiana.

A woman who faced screaming mobs at six years old stood before this legislature and warned that history is repeating itself.

History is watching Louisiana again.

“A republic, if we can keep it.”

The four Black congressmen who have represented Louisiana since Reconstruction reminded this state of a truth older than the nation itself: democracy is fragile. It survives only when people believe their voices matter and their representation is fair.

Louisiana is over one-third Black. Fairness and basic mathematics point to the same conclusion: Black voters deserve fair representation, not maps designed to silence communities and dilute voting power.

Since Reconstruction, only FOUR Black Louisianans have ever served in Congress. Four. In more than 150 years.

As Shreveport buries eight children, the Louisiana Senate Democratic Caucus mourns alongside every family, neighbor, and friend carrying this unbearable grief.

We will not look away, and we will not move on.

We will continue fighting for the changes needed to protect children, families, and communities across Louisiana.

We stand with Shreveport. Today and always.
