The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality participated in the BRCX (Baton Rouge Complex) Tri-Annual Oil Spill/GRT (Global Response Team) Red Stick Exercise Aug. 19-20 alongside ExxonMobil in Baton Rouge.
The training exercise is a broad emergency preparedness simulation designed to test ExxonMobil and multiple responding agencies in times of emergency. The organizations taking part work together to emphasis the importance of coordination and quick emergency response.
The drill focuses on high-consequence maritime and industrial scenarios mostly along the Mississippi River corridor and surrounding Gulf regions.
“Events such as these provide an ideal venue for Federal, State, and Local Responders to understand how large corporations, such as ExxonMobil, will respond to and manage large scale events,” said Daniel Lambert, Environmental Scientist Senior and Disaster Coordinator, LDEQ. “It also provides an avenue for responding agencies to clearly express and manage expectations of what will be required in order to protect the safety and wellbeing of citizens and the environment.”
Besides representatives from LDEQ, other Louisiana agencies taking part in the drill included Louisiana State Police, the Oil Spill Coordinators Office, Wildlife and Fisheries, Department of Health, as well as the East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge Offices of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
