✍️ Good government can be measured by the services it provides, but also by how responsibly resources are managed — and that’s always front of mind for LDEQ. We were proud to join Governor Jeff Landry as he signed into law Act 85 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislative Session, a landmark measure that modernizes the Department’s funding structure and positions us to become fully self-reliant as we carry out our mission to protect Louisiana’s environment.

“Act 85 gives LDEQ the tools to restructure how we fund our programs and reduce reliance on State General Fund dollars, creating a more sustainable path forward for environmental protection in our state,” Secretary Courtney J. Burdette said. “We are grateful to Governor Landry for his leadership and support, as well as Representative Ken Brass, our legislative partners, industry partners, and all those who helped make this worthwhile reform a reality.”

Litter is a problem in Louisiana. As residents of Louisiana, it is our duty to report violators of our state’s litter laws. If you witness someone littering or illegally dumping, report them to 855-LA-Litter.

When you report littering or illegal dumping and wish to pursue charges, you will need to sign an affidavit, giving your oath that this offense took place. You will be required to testify in court if the violator wishes to contest the ticket. Enforcement officers will follow up with each report, interview the person who reported, and conduct a thorough investigation. Photos and videos of the act are helpful but not required. Do not use your phone while driving. If you report a dump site, an officer will conduct an in-person investigation.

🌀 With the threat of severe weather and a possible tropical system later this week, we want to remind you of some important tips:

Floodwater following severe weather can contain more than just rain. Stormwaters may carry fuel, sewerage, chemicals, debris, sharp objects, and bacteria that pose risks to people and the environment.

After a hurricane hits:
⚠️ Avoid driving or walking through floodwater when possible.
⚠️ Keep children and pets away.
⚠️ Wash thoroughly if contact occurs.

Storm safety doesn’t end when the rain breaks. Be ready, Louisiana.

While our mobile air monitoring lab (MAML) is usually out on the road monitoring environmental conditions across Louisiana, occasionally we are able to join outreach events like Touch-A-Truck to help educate communities and kids on what we do here at LDEQ. Check out the highlights from Touch-A-Truck 2026 that was held in Baton Rouge this past spring. 🧪

Our Affiliates are the boots on the ground, engaging local citizens in their efforts to keep Louisiana clean and beautiful. We cannot do this mission alone and appreciate every single volunteer who picks up litter, beautifies their spaces, and educates others on the importance of keeping Louisiana beautiful.
