Today we're honoring and remembering Air Force Major Gregory John Crossman.

Gregory Crossman was born on 09 August 1941. His military service records indicate that his home of record was the City of Sturgis in Saint Joseph County. He received his commission in the Air Force and would go on to serve in the Vietnam War. His military occupation or specialty was Tactical Fight Pilot where he was attached to the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force.

Then First Lieutenant Gregory Crossman was serving his country during the Vietnam War when he gave his all in the line of duty. During his service in the Vietnam War, then First Lieutenant Gregory Crossman’s F-4D Phantom aircraft was shot down during a nighttime armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam on 25 April 1968. Military records indicate that First Lieutenant Gregory Crossman was the pilot systems officer aboard the F-4D Phantom aircraft. While proceeding to targets in the Xuan Son Ferry area, the aircraft commander aboard the F-4D Phantom radioed to the flight leader on the mission that he would attack a truck convoy that he had spotted south of the Song Troc River. A short time later, witnesses aboard the other aircraft saw a fireball near the Phantom’s intended position. The Phantom’s crew could not be contacted by radio, and no parachutes were seen in the area. Search efforts could not be conducted due to strong enemy presence, and both crew members remain unaccounted for to this very day.

Our nation and community can NEVER repay the debt owed for the loss of Major Gregory John Crossman, but we can ALWAYS remember and honor him. His courage, his sacrifice, and his service to our nation will never be forgotten.

He is one of the 58,281 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Please join us in August 2026 as we seek to reflect, heal, and educate our community with The Wall That Heals.

The Battle Creek Cereal Festival is an annual event in downtown Battle Creek, Michigan, celebrating the city's cereal heritage with activities like a parade, live entertainment, vendors, and kids' activities. Both Brigadier General Secrist and Sam Gray set up a display table and tent at the event to raise awareness of The Wall That Heals.
