🏑 Thinking about buying a home? Financial assistance may be available.

Homeownership can feel out of reach, but programs through the Nevada Rural Housing Authority may help eligible homebuyers with:
🏠 Down payment assistance
πŸ“‰ Reduced mortgage interest rates
🀝 Homebuyer education and resources

At its July 9 meeting, the Lander County Commission approved its annual partnership with Nevada Rural Housing by transferring the county's private activity bond allocation to support affordable homeownership opportunities in rural Nevada.

During the meeting, Nevada Rural Housing officials shared that since 2006, their programs have helped 82 Lander County homebuyers, providing approximately $13 million in mortgages and more than $500,000 in down payment assistance. They also said they're working to expand eligibility for one of their assistance programs so more rural residents may qualify in the future.

If buying a home has been on your mind, it's worth exploring the programs available through Nevada Rural Housing.

🚧 Road safety improvements are coming to State Route 305

Lander County Commissioners have awarded a contract for construction of new acceleration and deceleration lanes along State Route 305.

The project includes roadway, drainage and intersection improvements designed to improve traffic flow and safety. Qualcon Contractors Inc. was awarded the contract after submitting the lowest responsive bid of three proposals.

As construction schedules are finalized, we'll share updates on when work will begin and any traffic impacts residents should expect.

🚨 $36,000 grant strengthens Lander County's emergency preparedness

Lander County Commissioners have approved acceptance of a $36,000 State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) grant to help strengthen the county's hazardous materials emergency response capabilities.

The funding will help equip and maintain the county's hazardous materials response trailer with updated emergency equipment, including:
πŸš’ Hazmat response kits
🚿 Portable decontamination shower systems
🌦️ Weather stations
πŸ“š Emergency Response Guidebooks
πŸ”’ Safety and equipment storage upgrades

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) says maintaining a well-equipped hazardous materials trailer is especially important in a rural county like Lander, where emergency responders may need specialized equipment to safely manage hazardous materials incidents and support annual emergency response training.

Thank you to the members of the LEPC and everyone who worked to secure this funding and strengthen emergency preparedness for our community.

🏑 "There's a bigger plan than just, 'Oh, we've got this building and hope someone fills it up.'"

That's how Lander County Engineer Aaron Martinez describes the vision behind Austin's new Community & Health Center.

Designed to serve the community for years to come, the new facility will bring together space for community events, family celebrations, meetings, computer access, a commercial kitchen and expanded healthcare services closer to home.

πŸ’¬ As Martinez explained: "We wanted to make it as multipurpose as we can because, in a small community, it has to be used."

Construction is in its final stages, with completion expected later this summer.
