Now you know!

The direction of the spin of a storm depends on its location relative to the equator!

North=counterclockwise
South=clockwise

200 miles equates to about 5 degrees latitude on either side of the equator. The Coriolis Effect is strongest at the poles and weakest at the equator- no to little change in wind speed means no formation for cyclones- except for in VERY rare circumstances!

Hurricane names aren’t random — and some become part of history forever. 🌪️

Atlantic hurricane names rotate every 6 years, but when a storm causes catastrophic damage or loss of life, that name gets permanently retired.

That’s why you’ll never see names like Katrina(2005), Irene(2011), Sandy(2012), Matthew(2016), Irma(2017), or Helene(2024) used again.

Hurricane Season begins June 1. Now’s the time to prepare, not panic. ⛈️

DAY 2 and 13 days until hurricane season!

🌪️ Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones are basically the same storm wearing different name tags depending on where they show up.

It’s like:
🇺🇸 “Hurricane”
🇯🇵 “Typhoon”
🇦🇺 “Cyclone”

Mother Nature said “international branding.” 🌎

No matter what they’re called, they all come with:
💨 Strong winds
🌧️ Heavy rain
🌊 Flooding & storm surge
😐 And at least one person saying, “Well we needed the rain.”

As hurricane season approaches, now’s the time to prepare before the group chat starts tracking spaghetti models from somebody’s cousin’s Facebook post.

✔️ Review your emergency plan
✔️ Check your supplies
✔️ Stay informed from trusted sources

Different names. Same storm. Same reason to be prepared.

We are officially TWO weeks away from the official start of Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Over the next two weeks, we'll be posting tips, facts and other helpful information to make sure you and yours stay hurricane ready. While NOAA hasn't released their forecasts yet, Colorado State University is forecasting at-or-below average conditions with 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes(Category 3 or higher).

We may face more favorable conditions due to the transition from La Niña to El Niño- which produces a strong vertical wind that disrupts the development of the storms.

In any case, staying prepared is crucial. Now is a good time to make sure you're subscribed to weather alerts and have push notifications turned on.
