Appling County- you asked, we're answering.

We've now HAD our first named tropical system of the year. Arthur showed up to welcome us into hurricane season and stepped right back out after dropping significant amounts of rain across Texas and Louisiana.

What does that mean for us? We'll get some rain and wind. There's a chance for showers and/or storms all weekend in our area. While we don't have major threats, always be weather aware and keep notifications turned on. Heat will still remain a concern. We will be monitoring the system as it continues to deteriorate and will keep this page up to date of any changes.

Life is full of things we can count on.

Will the 10mm socket be missing? Of course. đź«Ł

Will we switch between metric and imperial seven times on one bike upgrade? Absolutely. 🤫

Will the wrench you JUST had in your hand magically be out of reach when you haven’t even moved? You betcha. 🫨

Ya know what we can’t count on? Folks being prepared when you’ve been preaching for months to have plans and kits. 🫩

Please do me a favor. Tonight, when you sit down with your kids, your dogs or your TV to have supper, at least discuss your emergency plan and grab one or two things to add to your kit. 🤗

If you have an AED or know someone who does, this message is for YOU!

Following the signing of SB 399, also known as the Mason Sells AED Coordination Act, we are required to maintain a registry of all Automatic External Defibrillators(AEDs) in the county.

The law includes churches, schools, businesses, public buildings and more. It was put in place to help 911 dispatchers and first responders locate AEDs in the event of an emergency.

If you have an AED, please contact Assistant 911 Director, Kathy Brinkley, to add the location and information to our registry!

The story behind the bill:

Mason Sells was 20 years old in 2024 when his heart stopped after a soccer ball hit his chest during an intramural soccer match at Mercer, where he was studying accounting.

His father later learned that there was an AED near the field Mason was playing on but it was locked in an office and no one on the field knew about it or had access to it.

By the time emergency responders arrived and could use an AED to restart Mason’s heart, it was too late.

Mason’s father connected with Georgia lawmakers but he didn’t think anything would come of it until he was being contacted to testify for the bill.

This week our Director and Deputy Director are attending the Georgia School Safety and Homeland Security Conference.

Their attendance at the conference is to ensure as they update the plans, procedures and expectations that they’re up to date on legislature, technology and best practices in keeping our kids safe.

Today, they heard from Keynote Speakers Reichen and Karly Posey- as Sandy Hook survivor and his mother. They heard about the fear, frustration and growth surrounding the Sandy Hook incident in 2012 and plan to use points from the keynote to help facilitate the necessary actions and vital relationships for when our community needs them most.

"The burn bans are up, I can burn if I want to!"

And that may be true, but these graphics are why we in Public Safety and EMA say "really, please don't, though." The rain we've gotten lately was nothing short of Heaven sent, we agree, but, we are still in a historic drought, friends.

We get it, we still have yard debris, cardboard, and spring cleaning to get rid of, but when we aren't exercising extreme caution or get too complacent with burning, it turns catastrophic faster than your dad letting his foot off the gas when he passes a sheriff's deputy.

If you absolutely can't help yourself, keep a close eye on your burn, keep it contained, and know how you're going to extinguish the flame in the event of changing winds or your having to leave. Make sure to completely douse ashes, smolders and your burn area to prevent spreading and loss of control.

Hurricane Season has entered the chat!

Will we get a hurricane this year? Maybe. Will your weather app send you into a mild emotional crisis over every tropical disturbance? Almost certainly.

Now is the time to:

â›˝ Don't wait until there's a cone pointed at Georgia to get gas

Remember: "I'll do it later" is the official motto of people standing in a 45-minute line at the grocery store two days before landfall. đź«©

The good news? Preparedness isn't complicated. A little planning now means a lot less stress later.

Appling County EMA will be here all season long with updates, preparedness tips, weather information, and occasional reminders that hurricanes do not care whether you've had a busy week.
