Honor Flight Savannah

Honor Flight Savannah We transport America’s Veterans, free of charge, to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices they made.

The mission of the Honor Flight Network is to fly America’s veterans to Washington, D.C., so that they may visit the memorials built and dedicated to
honor their sacrifices in past wars. This service is provided at no cost to the veteran and is funded entirely by private and corporate donations. Many of our veterans are physically or
financially unable to make a trip like this. Many veterans are w

ithout the friends or family members willing and able to accompany them on a trip to Washington, D.C. The Honor Flight Network exists for the sole purpose of providing the opportunity to visit these memorials, at no cost to the veteran. Transportation to Washington, D.C., deluxe
tour bus service, all meals, snacks, t-shirts and other amenities are provided free to the veterans. We also provide trained, volunteer guardians who ac- company the veterans for the entire trip. Perhaps the most valuable thing that we provide the veteran is the companionship of other veterans, new friends with similar experiences and a true understanding and appreciation for the missions accomplished.

France grapples with memories of the destruction that came with Allied liberation — complicated stories of trauma and loss amid World War II heroism.

From Col Cole Kingseed - author of Beyond Band of Brothers

D-Day plus 80 Years is special for me. Over the course of the past four decades, I have been honored to meet many of the veterans of the Longest Day. They are all gone now, but their memory haunts my soul. Soldiers like Dick Winters of Brecourt Manor, 1SG Leonard (Bud) Lomell of Pointe du Hoc, Joe Dawson who was first to bring his company to the summit of the bluffs over Omaha Ridge, Jim Gavin of the 2nd Airborne Division, Maxwell Taylor of the 101st Airborne Division, Major John Howard of Pegasus Bridge, and a host of other men who have bequeathed a legacy of heroism in combat. Let us honor them now and all the men and women of the Allied Expeditionary Force who cracked Hitler’s Atlantic Wall on June 6, 1944.

By the end of 2024 Veterans Affairs estimate that there will be less than 100,000 veterans of World War II in the United States. I salute them and pray that Almighty God sheds His blessings on them and grant them quiet and peace before they join their fallen comrades in eternal glory.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Capt. Robert J. “Bob” Shoens. Bob visited the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force during the 100thBG Foundation 2013 Reunion. Bob served as a pilot in the 351st Bomb Squadron, flying the famed B-17 “Our Gal Sal.” Bob flew his first mission in January 1944, and he went on to complete 28 combat missions by May 1944. During the March 6, 1944 mission to Berlin, Bob led his crew through the flak and fighters. They were the only crew from the 351st Squadron to return to Thorpe Abbotts that day. He passed away on February 3, 2024 at 102.

Captain Bob Shoens’ dedication to honoring the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force was a testament to his selflessness and commitment to his country. Bob was determined to help ensure the men of the Bloody Hundredth would never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Fly high.
