Bring your pets inside and be prepared for a frozen weekend! Saturday looks to be the coldest day of the year so far, with possible ice storms. Prepare for loss of power. Have an emergency plan. Include ways to stay warm, food and water. Don’t wait any longer. If you have a generator, make sure you have plenty of gas. If power goes out, the pumps won’t work at the convenience stores. Hopefully it’s going to pass us by, but it looks like our paths will meet as of now.

After a busy day, eating with the family or watching football, remember that falling asleep at the wheel can be a tragic end to a joyful holiday. Rest alone can solve this problem. Stimulants, coffee or energy drinks just don’t do the trick.

Have a great Thanksgiving break and remember while traveling to keep everyone in your vehicle safe. The goal of all our enforcement campaigns is to urge our citizens to take a few seconds and buckle up. While you’re at it, check tire pressure, wiper blades, headlights and stop lamps. Make sure your vehicle is in good and safe working order so you can ARRIVE ALIVE.

The BSPD said a final farewell today to this young firefighter after giving his life in a structure fire. Malachi leaves behind a precious young wife and three beautiful children. Fire Departments from all over came to pay respects today from as far off as Lenexa. FD, PD and Sheriffs have stood watch, two at a time, 24 hours a day with Malachi the last week because we were honored to rest with him and let him know his new world has just begun. Fire Crews rfrom Joplin, Reddings Mill, Tribal Fire, Pittsburg, Oswego and on and on took turns out answering calls so our men and women could keep their minds on Malachi and his loved ones. It is hard to explain the feeling of living in a part of the country where it is literally one for all and all for one. Chief Wixon and Sheriff Groves worked so hard to make this a ceremony that Malachi was proud of. It was humbling for me to see the amount of love these brothers have for each other. I thank Lt. Brown for his service and for laying down his life for another. RIP my friend, my brother. Your shift is over and your brothers will take the watch now. Be proud of your fellow flame eaters as they are proud of you!

Today we mourn the passing of Lt. Malachi Brown who gave his life, serving others. It is something Firefighters and Police Officers live with daily. Knowing that your next call could mean never seeing your family again. Lt. Brown gave his life while searching a burning home , making sure no one was left behind. The community has been so supportive and I pray we all continue to support Jessica and the kids. Jessica has been so very brave and deserves our help now. It was an honor to take part in escorting Malachi home today, to the community he served so well.
