Dear Editor,
Recently while talking with some hikers at Window Cliffs State Natural Area, I found that they had no knowledge of private groups that support Tennessee State Parks and Natural Areas. With that in mind, the following is submitted:
In Tennessee there are:
59 State Parks: https://tnstateparks.com/about/find-a-park
84 State Natural Areas:
https://www.tn.gov/content/tn/environment/program-areas/na-natural-areas/list-of-natural-areas.html
and 5 future state parks: https://tnstateparks.com/about/future-state-parks
Please note that some State Parks and State Natural Areas overlap each other or are very close to each other.
Currently there are 51 organizations that support State Parks and Natural Areas.
Here in Putnam and White County, we have the Friends of Burgess Falls State Park and Window Cliffs State Natural Areas.
This Friends group can be found at https://www.facebook.com/BurgessFalls and at https://friendsofburgessfalls.com/ .

Our group is seeking new members and future organization leaders for the Friends of Burgess Falls State Park and Window Cliffs State Natural Area.
We hold quarterly meetings that usually last about an hour. Volunteer hours are flexible – you do how much you choose to do.
Positions in the organization are: Officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. There are 3-5 at large Directors. There are no limits to the number of members in the group.

The W**d Wrangle and Cross-Fence removal activity on 1 March 2025 was highly successful! 5 Friends volunteers and 2 park personnel worked over 3 hours each (21 hours of work) to remove a very old barbed-wire and cattle wire fence with wood posts and metal "T" posts. This was accomplished at the Window Cliffs State Natural Area. Thank you friends for caring about our natural resources.
