Hurricane Season is right around the corner, starting June 1st. I hope everyone is preparing early for the 2026 season. I have put together some helpful tips that I hope will be beneficial to your planning.
One of the most important things is to stay informed. Matagorda County officials have several places (website/facebook) you can obtain information. The Matagorda County Constable Pct. 6 - Constable Bill Orton page will provide you with direct information from the EOC/Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman. The information posted will inform you of updates on storm information, evacuation plans, road closures and conditions, re-entry procedures and up to date conditions throughout Precinct. 6 and nearby areas.
One important thing to remember is, please do not wait until the last minute to prepare. Once Matagorda County reaches tropical storm force winds, tropical storm watch or sustained winds greater than 49mph, high profile vehicles will not be allowed to travel roadways nor will first responders be able to respond to calls. I have provided additional information to this post on what high profile vehicles will look like and hurricane preparedness information and checklist. Please make preparations if needed to move these vehicles prior to reaching these conditions.
Road blocks will be placed on FM 457 at the Sargent Library. Your Precinct 6 Constables Office will work closely with the Matagorda County Sheriff's Office in protecting life and property during this time. If needed, I have additional resources available to provide extra officers during evacuation times.
We have always had a working relationship with our local Volunteer Fire Department to knock on doors and inform citizens in the neighborhoods closest to the coastline of evacuation. If evacuated please take personal identification and property ownership/rental paperwork such as rental contract, light bill, water bill, tax statement, anything that would tie you to the property for re-entry purposes. We want to ensure the citizens that we are taking every precaution necessary to protect their property from theft/looters.
I hope the information provided is useful, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Thank you and God bless you all!
