Bay City Electric, Light & Power (BCELP) is a municipal utility, owned by the City of Bay City, Michigan. We strive to offer value to our customers by providing reliable service at a competitive price. BCELP has served the Bay City area since 1868 when it was known as the Bay City Gas Light Company. Today we serve over 20,000 customers in our service area which includes Bay City and the surroundin

g townships of Bangor, Frankenlust, Hampton, Monitor, and Portsmouth. The utility is one of 2,000 community owned electric utilities that serves more than 42 million Americans. Delivering service to our customers requires more than 500 miles of overhead and underground distribution lines, fed from 10 distribution substations. Power is provided to these facilities from wholesale purchases, ownership of coal-fired generators Belle River and Campbell through the Michigan Public Power Agency, and local peak-shaving generating capacity at our Water Street and Henry Street plants. At year-end, Bay City Electric, Light & Power owned and operated plant and utility assets of $75 million with total annual revenues of approximately $37.9 million. BCELP currently has 44 employees to carryout the day to day operations of the utility including line construction and maintenance, line clearance, street light maintenance, generating plant operation and maintenance, metering installation and maintenance, service building upkeep, purchasing materials and supplies, and system planning functions. Our Energy Smart Program, is a portfolio of energy saving programs designed to assist you in reducing your electricity usage in your home and business. We are an ENERGY STAR Partner, dedicated to promoting energy efficiency as an easy and desirable option for organizations and consumers to prevent pollution, protect the global environment, and save on energy bills.

⚡At Bay City Electric Light & Power, we’re proud to celebrate Public Power Day, an event dedicated to showcasing the power of community-driven, sustainable energy.

🚨Here’s why this day is so important:

💙 What is Public Power Day? Public Power Day is a special event where we highlight the benefits of public power, educate our community about energy conservation, and celebrate the commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and clean energy.

⁉ Why is Public Power Day Important?

• Community Focus: Public power utilities are owned by the communities they serve. This means decisions are made locally, with a focus on what’s best for our residents rather than corporate profits.

• Sustainability: Public power supports initiatives that promote renewable energy and environmental stewardship. We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and investing in a greener future.

• Education: It’s a chance to educate the public about energy conservation, new technologies, and how they can make a difference in their own homes.

• Engagement: The event fosters a sense of community and connection. It’s an opportunity to meet the people behind the scenes and learn about the hard work that goes into keeping our lights on.

🚸As the new school year begins, Bay City Electric Light & Power wants to remind families to keep electrical safety in mind at home, in the classroom, and on the go!

🚨Here are a few quick tips to help students stay safe:
• Don’t overload outlets – Plugging in too many devices can cause overheating and fires. Use power strips with surge protection.
• Keep cords tidy – Make sure cords aren't pinched under furniture or rugs and never use damaged chargers or cables.
• Keep electronics away from water – Avoid using devices near sinks, tubs, or water bottles that might spill.
• Unplug when not in use – Chargers and small electronics should be unplugged when not being used to save energy and reduce risk.
• Never charge phones, tablets, laptops, etc. on your bed or under your pillow – it’s a fire hazard!

Teach kids early – Talk with your child about the importance of electrical safety and being aware of their surroundings.

Wishing everyone a safe and successful school year!

Bay City Electric Light & Power recently had the opportunity to participate in the Linsday Child Care Center Touch a Truck event!

Students enjoyed getting an up-close look at our line trucks, trying on hard hats and gloves, and learning about the important work our linemen perform every day to safely provide reliable electric service to our community.

The event also gave us an opportunity to share power line safety information with students and provide educational materials they could take home.

Thank you to Linsday for inviting us to be part of such a fun and educational event!

Indoor air quality plays an important role in maintaining a comfortable and healthy home environment. Air purifiers can help remove dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke particles, and other airborne contaminants from the air you breathe every day.

For individuals with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory concerns, an air purifier may help improve indoor comfort by reducing common irritants.

Bay City Electric Light & Power offers rebates on qualifying air purifiers, making it easier for customers to improve indoor air quality while investing in energy-efficient equipment.
