Bay City Electric, Light & Power (BCELP) is a municipal utility, owned by the City of Bay City, Michigan. We strive to offer value to our customers by providing reliable service at a competitive price. BCELP has served the Bay City area since 1868 when it was known as the Bay City Gas Light Company. Today we serve over 20,000 customers in our service area which includes Bay City and the surroundin

g townships of Bangor, Frankenlust, Hampton, Monitor, and Portsmouth. The utility is one of 2,000 community owned electric utilities that serves more than 42 million Americans. Delivering service to our customers requires more than 500 miles of overhead and underground distribution lines, fed from 10 distribution substations. Power is provided to these facilities from wholesale purchases, ownership of coal-fired generators Belle River and Campbell through the Michigan Public Power Agency, and local peak-shaving generating capacity at our Water Street and Henry Street plants. At year-end, Bay City Electric, Light & Power owned and operated plant and utility assets of $75 million with total annual revenues of approximately $37.9 million. BCELP currently has 44 employees to carryout the day to day operations of the utility including line construction and maintenance, line clearance, street light maintenance, generating plant operation and maintenance, metering installation and maintenance, service building upkeep, purchasing materials and supplies, and system planning functions. Our Energy Smart Program, is a portfolio of energy saving programs designed to assist you in reducing your electricity usage in your home and business. ๐ŸŒฌ If your air conditioner is struggling to keep up with the summer heat, making unusual noises, or running constantly, it may be time to consider an upgrade. Older cooling systems can use significantly more energy and may not cool your home as efficiently as newer models.

๐ŸŒฌ Bay City Electric Light & Power offers rebates on qualifying air conditioning systems to help make energy-efficient upgrades more affordable. Installing a high-efficiency unit can help improve comfort, lower energy use, and reduce monthly electric costs during the hottest months of the year.

๐ŸŒฌ Upgrading your cooling system is not only an investment in your home and comfort, but also a smart step toward reducing energy waste and supporting a more efficient community.

Air purifiers can help reduce dust, allergens, smoke particles, and other airborne pollutants in your home, making them especially helpful during allergy season, wildfire smoke events, or times when indoor air quality may be impacted.

We have rebates on qualifying air purifiers! Choosing an energy-efficient air purifier with a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) can help improve indoor air quality while using less energy.

When shopping for an air purifier, look for ENERGY STARยฎ certified models and compare CADR ratings to find a unit that fits the size of your space. Higher efficiency equipment can help improve comfort while reducing unnecessary energy use.

๐ŸŽ† Summer celebrations are right around the corner, and while fireworks can be fun, itโ€™s important to remember that they can also pose serious safety risks, especially around electrical equipment and power lines.

๐ŸŽ† Never light fireworks near utility poles, substations, transformers, or overhead power lines. Even a small spark can cause outages, equipment damage, fires, or injuries. Before celebrating, make sure your area is clear, dry conditions are considered, and all fireworks are handled responsibly. Better yet, leave the big displays to trained professionals. By taking a few extra precautions, we can help keep our neighborhoods safe and our lights on all summer long!

๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆWith graduation season right around the corner, we know balloons are a big part of the celebration, but itโ€™s important to keep safety in mind!

๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆKeep balloons away from power lines! Metallic (Mylar) balloons can cause outages and create dangerous situations if they come into contact with electrical equipment.

๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆIn fact, back in April 2021, a balloon-related incident knocked out substation circuits and left over 3,000 customers without power for more than an hour!

๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆThe good news โ€ฆ we havenโ€™t had another major incident like that since, so keep up the great work! Always secure balloons and dispose of them properly. A small precaution can help keep our community safe and powered while you celebrate!

โค๏ธ Bay City Electric Light & Power had a great time visiting Linsday Elementary for their Touch a Truck event! Students had the opportunity to get an up-close look at our line truck and learn more about what our linemen do every day to help safely keep the power on for our community.

๐Ÿ’™ The kids also got to try on hard hats and gloves, ask questions about linework, and learn important safety tips about staying safe around power lines. To help continue the fun and learning at home, students received power line safety coloring sheets, chalk, and glow sticks to take with them!

โค Thank you to Linsday Elementary for inviting us to be part of such a fun event.

We always enjoy opportunities to connect with students and teach the importance of electrical safety in our community!
