CITY OF BAY CITY TO HOST DUMP YOUR JUNK AND FALL RECYCLING EVENTS ON OCTOBER 17TH

BAY CITY, MI – The City of Bay City is offering two opportunities for residents and customers to clean out their homes and properly dispose of unwanted household materials during events scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The City's Dump Your Junk Residential Clean-Out Event and Fall Recycling Event will both take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. While the events are being held on the same day, each has different locations, accepted materials and eligibility requirements.
DUMP YOUR JUNK RESIDENTIAL CLEAN-OUT EVENT
Saturday, October 17, 2026 | 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Dump Your Junk will take place at three separate locations throughout Bay City and is available only to residents of the City of Bay City. Photo identification or other proof of City residency will be required.
Dumpsters will be available at the following locations:
• Defoe Park – 601 Marquette Avenue
• Cass Avenue Boat Launch – 620 Harrison Street
• 1301 N. Sherman Street – Enter from Woodside
The event is intended for household clean-out items that would normally be disposed of with residential trash, including couches and other furniture, mattresses, household goods, toys, clothing, old tents and camping gear, bagged trash and similar items.
"Dump Your Junk is another opportunity to use available resources in a way that directly benefits our neighborhoods and residents," said Shelli Thurston, Community Development Director for the City of Bay City. "By providing convenient locations for household clean-out items, we hope to make fall cleaning a little easier while helping keep our community clean."
Items not accepted at Dump Your Junk include hazardous materials, paint, tires, building or construction materials, wood, concrete, shingles, automotive parts, dirt or yard waste, appliances or white goods, scrap metal and batteries.
Commercial and industrial waste will not be accepted. For the safety of staff and residents, the City reserves the right to refuse items.
Dump Your Junk is limited to City of Bay City residents because the event is being supported with American Rescue Plan Act funding.
FALL RECYCLING EVENT
Saturday, October 17, 2026 | 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Center, 2900 N. Water Street
Separate from the Dump Your Junk event, the Fall Recycling Event will take place at the Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Center and is open to City of Bay City utility customers, including eligible customers who live outside the city limits.
Bay City Electric Light and Power is teaming up with Bay City Recycles to provide an opportunity to properly recycle a variety of household materials that may not belong in regular curbside trash or recycling.
"The Fall Recycling Event gives people an opportunity to responsibly dispose of materials that can be difficult to recycle through everyday curbside programs," said Bob Dion, Public Works Director for the City of Bay City. "By bringing several recycling options together in one location, we can make proper disposal more convenient while keeping reusable and recyclable materials out of the waste stream."
Accepted items include:
• Alkaline batteries; 9-volt batteries must be taped
• Cardboard
• CFL bulbs
• Electronic waste
• Flat-screen televisions
• Fluorescent lighting
• Latex paint, limit five
• Plastic film and bags
• Polystyrene foam
• Scrap metal
• Passenger car and truck tires, off the rim, limit 10
• Paper shredding, limit four boxes per customer
Acceptable shredding materials include paper, file folders, catalogs and magazines. Wood, glass, three-ring binders and wet documents will not be accepted for shredding.
Items not accepted at the Fall Recycling Event include commercial, industrial or business waste, building materials, cathode ray tube televisions, lighting ballasts, oil-based paint, smoke detectors, refuse, trash and yard waste.
APPLIANCE RECYCLING AND REBATES
Select appliances will also be accepted during the Fall Recycling Event, including:
• Dehumidifiers
• Freezers
• Refrigerators
• Room air-conditioning units
Residential Bay City Electric Light and Power customers may be eligible for a $50 rebate for qualifying refrigerators or freezers between 10 and 30 cubic feet and a $15 rebate for qualifying dehumidifiers and room air conditioners.
Customers may recycle up to two large and two small units per program year. Appliances must be operable to qualify for rebates.

Residents and customers are encouraged to review the requirements for each event before arriving to ensure they bring materials to the appropriate location.
