FEMA is Seeking Leaders for Youth Preparedness Council Applications.

Do you know a young leader who is passionate about making a positive impact on their community? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for students in grades eight through 11 interested in supporting disaster preparedness to join the Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).

Why is it Important for Youth to Apply?

FEMA created the Youth Preparedness Council in 2012 to bring together young leaders from across the country who are interested in disaster preparedness and community service. The YPC demonstrates FEMA’s commitment to involve America’s youth in preparedness-related activities. It also provides young people an opportunity to present their perspectives, feedback and opinions to FEMA staff.

During their terms, YPC members can make a difference in their community, gain valuable leadership and emergency management experience, and work with like-minded peers to help strengthen preparedness and resilience across the country.

What Do YPC Members Do?

YPC members meet with FEMA staff throughout their term to develop strategies, initiatives and project proposals. YPC members will also participate in the YPC summit held in Washington, DC with FEMA leaders and other preparedness professionals to network and learn more about the field.

Who Should Join the YPC?

Students in grades eight through 11 who have a passion for preparedness and helping others, are involved in their community, and have an aptitude for working on teams and as leaders.

Spread the Word!

You can spread the word by sharing information about the YPC with parents, educators, schools and organizations, and reaching out to friends and family! Do you know a student who would make a great candidate? Encourage them to apply today!

How to Apply?

The online application is open, and closes March 6, 2023, 11:59 p.m. PT. To learn more about the YPC and application requirements, visit http://www.ready.gov/kids/youth-preparedness-council and visit https://community.fema.gov/PreparednessCommunity/s/apply-to-ypc to apply.

FEMA will also host two webinars for potential applicants on Jan. 30, 2023.

School Season Means Sharing the Road.

It's never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present – especially before and after school.

-Always stop for Police Officers or crossing guards holding up a stop sign!
-Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas.
-Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.
-Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks.
-Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.
-In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection.
- Be extra vigilant in school zones and residential neighborhoods.

Be Safe!

Keep your busy toddler safe on a boat with Coast Guard Approved life vests for toddlers!

A toddler (between 18 months to 3 years old) needs some extra safety features on life jackets - such as a grab handle and strap between the legs. Toddlers less than 30 lbs. should use an infant life jacket with a heads-up cushion.

Toddler life jackets are usually labeled for kids 30-50 lbs., listed as U.S. Coast Guard Approved and Type II or Type III, but you may choose one less than 30 lbs. if you have a smaller toddler.

On Florida waters, each child under 13 years of age who is underway on a recreational vessel must wear an appropriate USCG–approved life jacket unless the child is below deck or in an enclosed cabin.

Important:
The owner and/or operator of a vessel is responsible for carrying, storing, maintaining, and using the safety equipment required by the USCG.

The state of Florida urges all people onboard a boat to wear a life jacket regardless of age.

Avoid and report scams!

From the relentless series of powerful storms that have battered California to the dozens of tornadoes that swept across six states, including Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky, 2023 is off to a devastating start.

Whether you’re getting back on your feet or looking for ways to help people in hard-hit areas, learn how scammers operate — and how to avoid them.

Here are a few ways to spot the scammers who might try to take your money or personal information after a weather emergency:

Spot imposter scams. Scammers might pretend to be safety inspectors, government officials trying to help you, or utility workers who say immediate work is required. Don’t give them money, and ask for identification to verify who you are dealing with — before sharing personal information like your Social Security or account numbers.

Spot FEMA impersonators charging application fees. If someone wants money to help you qualify for FEMA funds, it’s a scam. Download the FEMA Mobile App to get alerts and information. Visit FEMA.gov for more information.

Spot home improvement and debris removal scams. Unlicensed contractors and scammers may appear in recovery zones with promises of quick repairs or clean-up services. Walk away if they demand cash payments up front, or refuse to give you copies of their license, insurance, and a contract in writing.

Spot rental listing scams. Scammers know people need a place to live while they rebuild. They’ll advertise rentals that don’t exist to get your money and run. The scammers are the ones who tell you to wire money, or who ask for security deposits or rent before you’ve met or signed a lease.

Spot charity scams. Scammers will often try to profit from the misfortune of others, sometimes using familiar-sounding names or logos. Check Donating Wisely and Avoiding Charity Scams before opening up your wallet.

Learn more at ftc.gov/WeatherEmergencies and report weather-related scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

It’s one thing to prepare your family, pets, and property for extreme weather situations.

The Town has contracted with Envirowaste Services Group, Inc. to perform smoke testing throughout the Town. During the test, crews will send white smoke into the Town’s sewer system by blowing it into a manhole, and monitoring where the smoke escapes the system. The smoke is safe for humans and pets, non-toxic, odorless, and non-staining. Smoke will not enter your home or business unless there is an issue with your plumbing. Prior to any testing, pour water down all the drains to fill traps, especially if you have a bathroom or plumbing fixture that isn’t used regularly.

Smoke testing is important because millions of gallons of storm water infiltrate our system each year and can overload our collection system and County treatment plant. The smoke testing will help locate and identify the source of storm water infiltration in the sewer system. While testing, smoke may be seen around manhole covers, storm drains roof vents, and areas of defects. Go to https://www.bayharborislands-fl.gov/DocumentCenter/View/2571/Smoke-Testing-Letter for more info!
