It's National Volunteer Firefighter Day! - A time to honor .

The dedicated volunteer firefighters in Alabama provide countless hours of services to the citizens and businesses. Volunteers respond to fires, vehicle accidents, medical calls and other emergencies.

National Volunteer Firefighter Day is an opportunity for citizens to say thank you and honor those who are dedicated and use their personal time to protect them. Volunteers are truly unsung heroes that show up in your time of need. Consider stopping by your local to say thank you, donate snacks, water/Gatorade, a meal, etc.

Thank you for your courage, commitment and all you do for your community! You are greatly appreciated! God bless you.

Yesterday, Theodore Dawes Fire Rescue Engine 4 and a Mobile County EMS ambulance were involved in a motor vehicle accident on I-10 while in the process of operating on a medical call.

While our crews were working the scene, a passing motorist failed to recognize the emergency vehicles and struck Engine 4 and a Mobile County EMS ambulance. Thankfully, none of our firefighters, the Mobile County EMS crew, or the patient they were treating were injured. The driver of the passenger vehicle that struck Engine 4 was transported to USA Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

While we are extremely thankful everyone is okay, this incident is also an important reminder of why proper roadway incident safety matters.

We especially want to recognize our on-duty crew for following Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) safety procedures to the letter. Engine 4 was positioned intentionally to provide a protective barrier between approaching traffic and the medical scene. That positioning did exactly what it was supposed to do—the apparatus took the impact instead of our firefighters, the EMS crew, or the patient. Without that protection, the outcome of this incident could have been gravely different.

We train for situations like this because operating on the interstate is one of the most dangerous environments our personnel face. Yesterday was a very real example of why that training, discipline, and attention to procedure matter.

We also want to sincerely thank our neighboring fire departments, Mobile County EMS, fellow first responders, and members of the community who have reached out to check on our personnel and offer their support. The number of calls, messages, and offers of assistance we have received has been overwhelming, and we are incredibly grateful.

Finally, please remember: when you see emergency vehicles operating on the roadway, slow down, move over, and pay attention. There are firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement officers, patients, and motorists on the other side of those warning lights.

Engines can be repaired and equipment can be replaced. People cannot.

Stay alert. Slow down. Move over. Help us make sure everyone goes home.

Over the last couple of days we have found cases of water and Gatorade show up at the door at the station. We greatly appreciate these donations.

The reason they are important to us and we are so grateful is because we CANNOT purchase hydration products with our county ad valorem tax distributions.

Be careful outside this week.

Do YOU know the difference between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke? The symptoms can vary from person to person, and you may not exhibit all at the same time.
On days like today, when the heat indices are 105-110 degrees and the morning temperatures weren't as cool as typical, the cumulative impacts of the heat can amplify the risk of both heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Stay hydrated.
Limit time outdoors during the daytime hours if possible.
Use AC - fans alone may not be enough.
Check on the elderly, kids, pets, and anyone who may not have access to adequate cooling.

EMS WEEK 2026

Established in 1974, EMS Week was created to recognize the critical role EMS professionals play in our communities—on every call, every shift, every day.

Over the years, the job has changed. The calls have gotten more complex. The expectations higher. The tones continue dropping before you’ve even had a chance to sit down. It’s the calls that run long—and the ones you wish had gone longer.

Thank you so much for your donation of water. We have to rely on donations and fund raisers to purchase hydration products. We are not allowed to use county funds for hydration products.
