The City of Bay St. Louis is currently accepting applications for the laborer position in the public works department.
Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to maintain public property for the City of Bay St. Louis. This is a general labor position, which involves daily physical activity for general maintenance and repairs as well as custodial work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Fulfil work orders, or verbal instructions, assigned by the supervisor, cut grass, trim weeds, and trim trees on city property, maintain gardens owned by the city, pick up litter around the city, clean buildings and wash windows, empty trash cans on a daily basis and clean the trash cans as needed and for special events, paint interior and exterior walls, drive truck and load fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck, ensure all machinery is operating properly, clean sidewalks, make sure the roads are graded, patch pot holes, pressure wash city facilities, drive dump truck, clean ditches and culverts to make sure the storm water is flowing properly, serve as a spotter for the heavy machine operators who are cutting the ditches and other city right of ways to make sure they don’t hit any pipes, debris, or trash, clean vehicles and equipment, direct traffic while crews are working, distribute barricades for special events, bring in all trash cans and other city property during bad weather events, additional duties as assigned by the Public Works Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of hand and power tools, ability to work in outdoor and industrial environments which include exposure to dust, mud, loud noise, traffic, heavy equipment, and hazardous materials, physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, ability to follow a regular work schedule on Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm with a 30 minute lunch break, required to work on weekends and after hours for special events, as needed, ability to work for hurricanes and other emergency situations, ability to drive a dump truck, complete work in timely manner, observes safety and security procedures and reports potentially unsafe conditions to the supervisor or Public Works Director, use equipment and materials properly, adapts to changes in the work environment, able to deal with delays or other unexpected events, consistently at work and on time, willing to learn other jobs for advancement.
