We’ve been working behind the scenes for the past few months with the Library Foundation of Hancock County, United Way of South Mississippi, and Second Line Used Bookstore on something very special for the children and families of Hancock County.

We aren’t quite ready to share all the details yet—but we will be very soon.

Follow Second Line Used Bookstore and stay tuned. We have some BIG news coming as we kick off Library Card Sign-Up Month this September!

Dolly believed every child deserved the opportunity to fall in love with a book. We’re looking forward to doing our part to help that legacy continue right here in Hancock County.

Like so many around the world, we are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton.

Dolly gave the world an incredible amount through her music, her generosity, and her kindness, but those of us who believe in the power of reading will always hold a special appreciation for the legacy she created through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

What began in 1995 as a program inspired by her father's inability to read and write grew into a worldwide movement that today provides more than two million free books each month to children.

Here in Hancock County, we have been quietly working on something very special that will help ensure Dolly's mission of putting books into the hands of children continues right here in our community.

We look forward to sharing more with you very soon.

Today, though, we simply say thank you, Dolly—for the music, the laughter, the generosity, and especially for believing that every child deserves the opportunity to fall in love with a book. You built a legacy that will keep kids turning pages.

Your story may have ended, but the stories you helped place into the hands of millions of children will continue for generations.

🇺🇸 Your Story Is Part of America’s Story

As America 250 is underway across Mississippi, the Mississippi Library Commission is helping preserve an important part of our history—the firsthand stories of Mississippi veterans.

Through the Veterans History Project, MLC is working to record and preserve the experiences of veterans across our state. Mississippi is home to more than 182,000 veterans, yet just over 500 Mississippi oral histories are currently represented in the Veterans History Project collection.

Here in Hancock County, we know there are countless stories of service, sacrifice, courage, and history that deserve to be preserved.

Are you a veteran who would like to share your story? Or do you have a parent, grandparent, spouse, friend, or neighbor whose story should be remembered?

We encourage our Hancock County veterans and their families to participate and help make their experiences part of Mississippi's America 250 story. Veterans who have served since World War I are eligible to share their firsthand recollections through the project.

🇺🇸 History isn't only something we read about. It's something our neighbors lived. Let's help preserve it.

Veterans or family members can submit their information directly here:

While there are more than 182,000 veterans that currently live in Mississippi, there are just over 500 oral histories in the collection. Help MLC add to Mississippi’s collection by signing up to tell your story. Email us at [email protected] and provide your contact information or call 601-432-415...

🐾📚 SIT, STAY, READ! 📚🐾

Calling all young readers! Join us at the Waveland Library on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m. to noon for a special reading adventure with some very furry friends! 🐶❤️

Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi will be bringing two therapy dogs to the library, giving children a wonderful opportunity to sit, relax, and read a book aloud to a friendly, patient listener.

Reading to a therapy dog can help children build confidence, reading skills, and a love of reading—and there's no better audience than a dog who is happy to listen! 🐕📖

Bookmark reading logs and coloring pages will also be available for children to take home.

⏰ Saturday, September 19 | 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
