Last Friday the Bayard Fire Department held their annual awards banquet. We have an amazing group of Firefighters/Paramedics/ EMT’s that put many hours in yearly that we are so proud of. We also want to recognize our Auxiliary, Rural Board, and City for everything they do for the Fire Department!!
A huge shout out to the Bayard American Legion for your hospitality and as usual the food was delicious!!

Media Release – June 8, 2026 Flash Flooding Event

On Monday, June 8th, 2026, Morrill County experienced significant flash flooding following severe thunderstorms in the Bayard, Moomaw’s, Link 62A (L62A), and Angora areas. The flooding impacted county roads, private property, and the entirety of L62A.

Due to hazardous conditions and floodwaters affecting the entire length of L62A, the roadway was closed to traffic until the following day. The flooding caused substantial damage to both private property and public infrastructure throughout the affected areas.

Multiple deputies from the Morrill County Sheriff’s Office responded to the flooding incidents and worked alongside numerous partner agencies to assist residents, monitor road conditions, coordinate evacuations, and provide support wherever needed. The safety of our residents remained the top priority throughout the incident.

The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the following agencies and organizations for their assistance and cooperation during this emergency:

• Nebraska Game and Parks Commission
• Bayard Volunteer Fire Department
• Bayard Police Department
• Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department
• Nebraska State Patrol
• Morrill County Roads Department
• Nebraska Department of Transportation
• Several local irrigation companies

We would also like to recognize and thank our dispatchers for their outstanding work behind the scenes during this incident. Dispatch personnel handled multiple 9-1-1 calls, coordinated resources to affected areas, managed radio traffic between numerous responding agencies, and played a critical role in ensuring an effective and organized emergency response.

We would also like to thank the citizens of Morrill County for their cooperation and patience during this event, especially those who promptly evacuated when advised to do so. Your willingness to follow emergency instructions greatly contributed to the safety of our community and the effectiveness of the response efforts.

L62A link is now open. Many other roads to the North and East of Bayard remain closed or in poor shape. Some may appear passable but more traffic will cause their condition to deteriorate quickly so please avoid them if possible. These include:
-Rd 83 South of L62A (bridges washed out)
-Rd 104, 106, 108, 110, and 112 between 81 and 83 (impassable areas and 2 bridges washed out)
-Rd 79 and 81 between 110 and L62A (impassable)
-Area of Rd 73 and 116 the road is washed completely out
-Rd 75 North of 122, and several other roads in that area are impassable
-Rd 77 North of L62A, especially North of 118 is impassable
NWS in Cheyenne has predicted we will receive another 0.5” to 0.75” this evening, which will only make the roads worse. Please limit travel in these areas and give them time to dry out fully and road crews to make repairs.
