Scam Alert for Veterans:

VA has issued a warning about a “Veterans Savings Program” postcard scam. These postcards may claim that a veteran or spouse qualifies for extra VA benefits, additional monthly payments, CHAMPVA, TRICARE, or dental coverage. VA says this is a scam designed to get veterans to call an unverified number and provide personal information.

Do not call the number on the postcard. Do not provide your Social Security number, bank information, VA login information, or other personal details.

To verify any VA benefit, contact VA directly at 1-800-827-1000 or contact your accredited Veterans Service Officer. Suspected fraud can be reported at VSAFE.gov or by calling 1-833-38V-SAFE.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office joins our community and our nation in honoring the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or a day off — it is a time to remember those who gave their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy every day. We are forever grateful for their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty.

As we spend time with family and friends today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and honor the memory of our fallen heroes.

Please keep the families of the fallen, our veterans, and those currently serving in your thoughts today.

From all of us at the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office, thank you to those who gave everything for our nation. We will never forget.

In an NPR piece, Congressman Chris Pappas discusses his bill and efforts to rein in claim sharks. Our work continues.

"It's crazy what these guys are trying to get away with," Pappas told NPR. "To use a robo-dialer to make multiple calls to government lines and then just send veterans a bill whenever their eligibility has changed, it's just outrageous."

We’re pleased to share that the Children of Wartime Veterans Scholarship application portal is now open for Fall 2026.

The portal will remain open through June 8, 2026, so that awards can be announced before classes begin in August.

Apply here: https://scholarships.milvets.nc.gov

We know this shorter timeframe may be challenging, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our veteran families. As always, we are grateful for the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families.
