A Message from Bayonne Fire Department Acting Chief Frank Pawlowski Regarding Today’s Fire

At approximately 2:42 p.m. today, the Bayonne Fire Department responded to 387 Avenue C, between 16th and 17th Streets, for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered an active fire in the basement of a multi-family residential building. Firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire, bringing the incident under control at approximately 3:04 p.m.

There were no reported injuries, and no residents were displaced as a result of the fire. During operations, Bayonne firefighters also successfully rescued one dog from the building.

Following an investigation by the Bayonne Fire Department, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature.

Great job by all responding personnel for their quick response, professionalism, and coordinated efforts in bringing this incident safely under control.

🚨 SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING – BAYONNE 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Hudson County, including the City of Bayonne, until 7:15 PM.

⚠️ PRIMARY THREATS:
• Damaging wind gusts up to 60 MPH
• Downed trees and power lines
• Heavy rainfall and localized flooding
• Dangerous lightning

SAFETY REMINDERS:

🏠 Move indoors and stay away from windows.
🌳 Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
⚡ Never approach downed wires — always assume they are energized.
🌊 Never drive or walk through flooded roadways.
📱 Keep phones and essential equipment charged and monitor official alerts.

Bayonne OEM is monitoring weather conditions and will provide updates as necessary.

The City of Bayonne is aware of concerns about the bird deterrent netting that was recently installed at the bridge at 8th Street and Broadway. The purpose and intention of this netting is to mitigate the ongoing public health concerns involving the accumulation of bird f***s under bridges located within the City of Bayonne. Prior to the institution of a netting solution, regular and ongoing cleaning efforts were conducted by the Department of Public Works. Unfortunately, such efforts were unsuccessful in providing a lasting solution that adequately addressed public health demands.

During the final installation of netting at 8th Street and Broadway, some birds (pigeons) continued to roost in the structural eaves; leaving them stuck within the bridge. Before the closure of the netting system, traps with food and water were left inside the structure to facilitate a capture and release program that will be replicated on a regular basis until all birds are freed. The City’s vendor returned yesterday (8/31) to release any captured birds and will thereafter return every 48-hours to release additional birds until all have been freed from the bridge structure.

When a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop sign, drivers must stop—it’s the law.

Stay alert. Drive carefully. Help protect our children.

City of Bayonne Office of Emergency Management – Weather Advisory

The City of Bayonne Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for periods of heavy rain beginning today, August 31, and continuing through Thursday, September 3. Residents can help reduce the risk of street flooding by safely clearing leaves and debris from catch basins near their homes. If you choose to clear a catch basin grate, please wear gloves and remain alert to passing traffic.

As a reminder, if flooding occurs, residents should avoid traveling on flooded roadways, stay clear of low‑lying areas, and be prepared to move to higher ground—particularly if living at or below ground level. Basement apartments may be vulnerable to flooding; individuals in basement units should be ready to relocate to an upper floor and should not enter flooded basements.

The City of Bayonne will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

Once again, we express our deepest gratitude to our front-line responders.

Tonight’s heavy rain and flooding once again showcased the professionalism, dedication, and teamwork of Bayonne’s public safety and emergency response personnel.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the Bayonne Police Department, Bayonne Fire Department, Public Safety Dispatch, Department of Public Works, Office of Emergency Management (OEM-2), and McCabe Ambulance who worked tirelessly throughout the storm to safeguard our residents and ensure the safety of our city.

From responding to flooded streets and hazardous conditions, assisting residents, managing road closures, clearing storm drains and debris, coordinating resources, providing emergency medical assistance, and answering calls for help, our personnel demonstrated exceptional professionalism under challenging circumstances.

Many of these dedicated individuals worked outside in severe weather, while others diligently coordinated operations behind the scenes. Despite the demanding conditions, all shared a common mission: protecting the City of Bayonne and its residents.

Tonight’s efforts again were a true testament to the power of teamwork and the remarkable accomplishments that can be achieved when our Police, Fire, Dispatch, DPW, OEM, and McCabe Ambulance personnel collaborate effectively.

To every front-line responder who answered the call tonight, we extend our deepest appreciation for your hard work, unwavering commitment, and invaluable service to our community. Your contributions are sincerely valued and greatly appreciated.
