π¨SCAM ALERT: FAKE DMV TEXT MESSAGESπ¨
Troop B has received reports of a text message circulating that claims to be a "Final Notice" from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The message threatens to suspend your driver's license and revoke your registration if an outstanding traffic violation isn't paid immediately.
π THIS IS A SCAM. π
Please be aware: The Connecticut DMV will NEVER contact you via text message regarding unresolved traffic violations, to demand payment, or to threaten license suspension. Official notices of this nature are always sent through the US Postal Service.
Here are a few red flags to watch out for so you don't become a victim:
β’ Suspicious Links: Look closely at the web address. Scammers often use URLs that look official at first glance but are actually fake. In this example, the link contains "ct.gov" but actually ends in a bizarre ".bond" domain instead of an official state website address.
β’ High Pressure and Threats: Scammers create a false sense of urgency. Threatening to revoke your registration the very next day is a tactic designed to make you panic and click the link before you have time to think critically.
β’ Unsolicited Texts: Treat any unexpected text message demanding money or personal information, especially from a supposed government agency, with extreme caution.
What to do if you receive this message:
DO NOT click the link. DO NOT provide any personal or financial information. Simply delete the message.
