Last week Assistant Chief Brad Newnam and Chief Brendan Leader travelled to Wi******er, KY to complete a Tower Rescue Technician course with Red River Rescue. This marks the first department members certified to perform tower rescues, adding a valuable operational capability to serve our citizens and county to our departments.

Thank you to the amazing instructors with Red River Rescue, Josh Sloan and Jeremy Urekew for the top-notch instruction and to Josh Sloan for providing the media.

This week's training focused on roadside rope rescue skills. We pride ourselves on our technical rescue abilities as a department. We live in an area with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities necessitating a skilled rescue team but even just driving our roadways can lead to situations calling for rope rescue due to our rugged terrain. This week we worked with some of our latest equipment, the Arizona Vortex and Appalachian Hitching Post. Fancy names for a large tripod that can be attached directly to our Rescue 1 truck providing an anchor and high point all in one to be able to haul patients over embankments, bridges, etc. The world of rope rescue comes with risks and demands consistent and extensive training. We have multiple rope rescue technician level responders and more in the making.

Joining us for training: Lee County EMS and Lee County Coroner's Office. We as a Fire Department are fortunate to have fellow first responder agencies in this county that are willing to trust their lives to us to provide the best possible care by going over edges right there with our firefighters.

Fire Departments present: Lee County Fire Department, Beattyville Fire Department, Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, Primrose Volunteer Fire Department , MiddleFork Fire/Rescue #874

Huge thank you to Jason Haddix for getting our Brush Truck back in service in a matter of hours! While returning from a brush fire last night around midnight, the truck started spewing coolant. An early morning call to Jason and by lunch time he had the busted radiator replaced and the truck back in service, even with his auto shop as busy as always. April is shaping up to be a record month for run volume for us, so knowing we can count on a top-notch mechanic is a massive relief to let us focus on protecting our community.

Alert ⚠️:
- DO NOT BURN ON SUNDAY, KENTUCKY. Low humidities + mostly dry grounds + winds = increased fire spread probabilities. Let's keep our friends and families safe, DON'T BURN. - George

Last night firefighters trained on forcible entry tactics. This is an important skill set to master as seconds count and rapid access is critical. Strong work and dedication put in by our team, Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department and MiddleFork Fire/Rescue #874 helps keep our communities safe!

Thank you to State Fire/Rescue Training Area 13 for this valuable instruction and hands-on training prop.

Last weekend we got together for our annual Christmas and New Year's dinner but this year with a twist... we had our first combined dinner and awards ceremony with Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, Lee County Fire Department and Beattyville Fire Department. These three departments operate so closely and seamlessly, even sharing personnel, that we decided to all get together as one big family and celebrate what we achieved in 2025.

Please join in congratulating:
2025 Firefighter of the Year: Sammy Holland
2025 Recruit Firefighter of the Year: Evan Rowe

Last year was a year of change and growth. We are modernizing our equipment and professionalizing our operations. A huge amount of new tools have been put into service but a couple of our favorites: Firehouse One brought in a new rescue truck. Tri-Community put on order a full set of battery extrication tools. The fancy tools mean nothing without training and these firefighters did just that with a cumulative total training hours of 3,276.5!

Good food and good laughs were had as we say goodbye to 2025 and look forward to serving our community at our best in 2026.

Big operational up for us to keep our community safe! Nice work and big thanks to Judge Mays and the Lee County Fiscal Court.

Judge Mays and the Lee County Fiscal Court is proud to have secured and delivered an adequate quantity of fire fighting foam to equip all eight Lee County fire engines housed across the four Lee County Fire Stations. Judge Steve Mays secured funding for this project through EKSAFE Grant. Fire fighting foam is an essential tool for fire suppression of flammable liquids and hazardous materials thus allowing our departments to be effective on scenes including vehicle fires, overturned tankers and more. All volunteer fire departments offer top-notch fire protection services across the entire county. Thank you to Lee County Fire Dept, Tri-Community Fire Dept, Primrose Fire Dept, and Bear Track Fire Dept for your daily sacrifices to serve and protect our citizens. Judge Mays & the Fiscal Court will always commit to supporting our essential Fire Departments and will seek grant opportunities to help where needed.
