🌴 The tree may be coming down, but the story is sticking around.

On Tuesday, July 28, beginning at 6 a.m., crews will begin to remove the palm tree at the corner of Charles Street and Boundary Street as part of the City's Driftwood Project.

🚧 Traffic impacts:
• Eastbound Boundary Street traffic will shift from two lanes to one lane while the work is underway.
• Warning signs directing motorists to merge left will be placed beginning near USCB, continuing around Bellamy Curve, and extending to Pigeon Point Road.

Please follow all posted signs, use caution in the area, and allow extra time if traveling through the work zone.

We know tree removal can raise questions, so here’s why this work is taking place. 🌴

The palm tree is home to a carving created years ago by a local man known as “Driftwood,” and over time, the artwork became a familiar sight for many in Beaufort.
The City does not take the removal of mature trees lightly, but after conversations with community members, the Parks and Trees Advisory Committee, and City staff, a decision was made to preserve the carving before the tree naturally declined or was damaged by storms or other causes.
The City of Beaufort Public Works Department will carefully remove the section of the palm tree featuring the carving. A local artist will then preserve and mount the artwork before it finds its new home at Morrall Park, where the community will be able to enjoy it for years to come. 🤩
