I am fortunate to live among the birds across from the island.
This past winter was so hard on them. Many perished due to the waters freezing for so long, many got frostbite of feet, pelicans of pouches, and there was a general shortage of food.
It has been so nice to see that some survived and the young are growing into handsome adults.
These are my neighbors, Great White Egret, Tri-Colored Egret and Great Blue Heron. I feel blessed everyday that they visit.

"The world on a sea turtle's back"
Sea turtles play an important role in the folklore of many Native American tribes. In the creation stories of the Lenape people, the Earth is created as soil is piled upon the back of a great sea turtle that continues to grow until it is carrying the entire world. Many indigenous tribes in North America refer to the continent as Turtle Island to this day.
Attached to this Loggerhead sea turtle's carapace is a community of organisms known as "epibionts". These living colonies are composed of organisms such algae, crustaceans, sponges, and barnacles. Scientists can study epibionts to learn more about sea turtles and their migratory patterns. If an organism that is only found in a certain area is identified on a sea turtle's shell, then we know that turtle has migrated through that area recently, traveling the oceans of the world with a miniature ecosystem on its back.
Are epibionts, such as barnacles, harmful to sea turtles? The relationship between sea turtles and barnacles is a form of commensalism, where barnacles attach to the turtle's shell for transport and a food source, receiving benefits without significant harm to the host. The turtle is the "platform" from which the barnacle feeds off of microscopic organisms found in the water currents. However, the interaction can become detrimental if barnacle loads become excessive, increasing drag and potentially hindering the turtle's swimming.
Healthy turtles can usually manage light infestations by scraping themselves to remove the barnacles. It depends on the size of a sea turtle and overall barnacle load if the sea turtle's movement will be impeded. The sea turtle's carapace is living tissue, and barnacle removal can actually cause a great deal of damage if done improperly. This is why the evaluation and removal of barnacles should only be performed by licensed sea turtle rehabilitators.

Researchers installed railroad crossing signals for wild animals in Banff National Park. Bells rang and lights flashed 30 seconds before each train arrived. Grizzly bears, elk, wolves, and coyotes fled the tracks 62 percent earlier at sites with the warning system than at sites without it, gaining an extra 360 feet of distance between themselves and the incoming train. The animals were not trained. Nobody conditioned them. The system was installed, the bells started ringing, and the animals figured out what the sound meant on their own.

Jonathan Backs, a PhD candidate in engineering and biological sciences at the University of Alberta, built the device. It is a small box bolted to the rail that detects an approaching train through vibration and changes in the magnetic field. When the sensors fire, the box triggers flashing lights and a bell sound at a location farther down the track where wildlife has been documented using the rail corridor. The warning begins 30 seconds before the train reaches the site. Thirty seconds is enough time for a grizzly bear standing on the tracks to register the sound, decide to move, walk or run off the rails, and clear the corridor before a train traveling 40 miles per hour covers the remaining distance.

Backs installed the systems at four sites along the Canadian Pacific Railway inside Banff in 2016 as part of a five-year grizzly bear research initiative funded by a million-dollar grant from Canadian Pacific. His supervisor, ecologist Colleen Cassady St. Clair, had been studying why grizzly bears were dying on the tracks at an alarming rate since the early 2000s. The railway was built in 1883. Bears and trains coexisted for over a century without significant mortality. Something changed around 2000.

What changed was the tracks themselves. The cleared rail bed became the easiest travel route through deep mountain snow. Walking on packed ballast costs a bear a fraction of the energy that wading through four feet of powder costs. Vegetation grows abundantly along the sunny, disturbed margins of the corridor: buffaloberry, other shrubs, and grasses that attract bears in spring and fall. Grain spills from freight trains leave piles of wheat and canola along the rails. The tracks became a trail system with a built-in cafeteria, and the bears that discovered this used the railway the way they would use any other travel corridor, except this one had trains on it.

Over a nine-month controlled experiment, Backs alternated warning and control treatments among the four sites, switching which sites had the bells and which did not every two to four weeks to account for seasonal variation. Trail cameras recorded every animal that appeared on the tracks before and during train arrivals. He logged 25 large-animal flight sequences and 149 small-animal sequences.

Large animals fled the tracks an average of 6.5 seconds earlier when the warning was operating, increasing their escape time from roughly 10.5 seconds to 17 seconds. That difference translated to 360 additional feet of space between the animal and the train. Small animals gained 3.3 seconds. The results were published in Transportation Research Part D in 2020.

The system does not scare the animals. Backs was specific about this. The purpose is not to frighten bears off the tracks permanently because frightening them would just push them into deep snow where travel costs more energy and survival gets harder. The purpose is to alert them that a train is coming right now so they move off the tracks for the 30 seconds it takes the train to pass and then walk back on. The bears are allowed to use the corridor. They are asked to step aside when the corridor is about to kill them.

Hey Folks,
I just saw this in Straits.
I have simply never seen anything like the light in this cloud.
It was soaking up the light from the sun going down directly across.
I took my breath away!

In sharing shell finds, etc.,
I want to share one of my wildest finds ever on Shackleford Banks, besides a cast iron bath tub foot...

Let me say, first, that Shackleford Banks is a wilderness area of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. That is important because anything found on the island, aside from non-living shells (ones with no inhabitants) must stay on the island, bones, pottery, teeth to name a few.

So when I walked sound side and found this, I was gobsmacked and quickly documented it as one of my now favorite photos, albeit a bit weird for some.

I then hung it high atop a tree, so it wouldn't wash out.

Pictured here is a still life of a Cannonball and a Moon Jelly.
The life of a Jelly is in anyone's control, BUT the Jelly's.
There life is lived out "anywhere the wind blows", much like in the song, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. With no way to propel themself in a desired direction, this guys are delivered whereever they land by wind and current.
The image on the left is of a Cannonball Jelly in the upper left and a Moon Jelly on lower right.
What to keep in mind and a difference between the two is that Moon Jellies WILL sting, Cannonballs, will not.

The photo on the left is of a Longnose Spider Crab hitching a ride while it feeds on the jelly's mouth folds. They also will use the bell of the jelly for protection. A symbiotic relationship.
