Registration is open for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training Program.

This program provides training to Beaufort County residents to enhance their self-sufficiency in the event of a disaster. Participants learn skills that will enable them to provide emergency assistance to their families and neighbors. CERT classes are offered free of charge and are held at various times throughout the year.

Fall 2026 classes will be held on St. Helena Island. Participants are required to attend all classes to complete the program. Before applying, please ensure you are available to attend all dates listed below.
• October 13 | 6 - 8 PM
• October 15 | 6 - 8 PM
• October 20 | 6 - 8 PM
• October 22 | 6 - 8 PM
• October 24 | 9 AM - Until the end of the exercise

On behalf of Sheriff PJ Tanner and the men and women of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our thoughts and prayers to the Hampton County Sheriff's Office, following the passing of Deputy Holmes.

Hampton County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Deputy Samuel Holmes.

Deputy Holmes joined Hampton County Sheriff’s Office shortly after retiring from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, bringing with him several years of dedicated law enforcement service. During his service with HCSO, Deputy Holmes served as a School Resource Officer at North District Middle School.

“Deputy Holmes was an outstanding officer with a warm, bubbly personality, an infectious smile and a commitment to serving others. He will be deeply missed. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask our community to please keep his family lifted in prayer during this very difficult time.”

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two separate incidents after bodies were found in waterways in northern Beaufort County on Sunday, August 30. At this time, the incidents are not believed to be related.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report of a body in Chowan Creek. Deputies responded to the area, and the body was recovered.

Later, at approximately 12:15 p.m., the Communications Center received a report of a body in the Broad River. Deputies responded, and the body was recovered.

The two individuals and the circumstances surrounding their deaths are not believed to be connected.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased following notification of next of kin. The causes of death are pending autopsy results.

Both incidents remain under investigation by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to report any suspicious or criminal activity by calling our non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 33-year-old Yu Wei Huo, who has been reported missing.

Huo is based at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina.

He was last seen at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in the area of the Broad River Bridge.

There is concern for his safety and well-being.

Huo is described as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a gray jacket, black shorts, and white shoes.

Anyone who sees Huo or has information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.
