On Women Veterans Day, we recognize the trailblazers who broke barriers, the leaders who continue to inspire, and the countless women whose service has helped protect our freedoms.

Don’t wait years later to learn about the benefits you may have earned through your military service.

Whether you’re preparing to leave active duty or have already separated, now is the time to understand what benefits and resources may be available to you and your family.

A Veterans Service Officer (VSO) can help you:

✅ File a Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) claim before separation

✅ Submit a VA disability claim after separation

✅ Enroll in VA health care

✅ Apply for education benefits such as the GI Bill

✅ Add eligible dependents to your VA benefits

✅ Understand state and local veteran programs

✅ Navigate claim decisions, supplemental claims, and appeals

Most importantly, these services are provided at no cost.

Don’t assume you don’t qualify. Ask the question.

Whether you separated last month, last year, or decades ago, it is never too late to explore the benefits you may have earned through your service.

This Memorial Day, honors and remembers the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, we encourage our community to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day — a day of remembrance for those who gave their lives defending our country.

Each year in Beaufort County, SC, thousands of service members transition from military service through retirement, EAS, and medical separation.

What many people do not realize is that transition affects far more than just the service member.

It impacts:
✔ Families
✔ Healthcare
✔ Employment
✔ Education planning
✔ VA disability claims
✔ Long-term financial stability

Beaufort County Veteran Service Officers regularly speak with transitioning service members about:

✔ Understanding separation timelines
✔ Gathering important documents
✔ Learning about available VA programs
✔ Understanding BDD eligibility
✔ Understanding the VA claims process

One of the biggest things we see is Veterans waiting until after separation to start learning about benefits they could have learned about months earlier.

The earlier a service member starts preparing, the smoother the transition process can be for both the Veteran and their family.

The Sons of Union Veterans, in partnership with the Beaufort County Veterans Affairs Department, cordially invite you to attend the 2026 Annual Memorial Day Parade in Beaufort, South Carolina.

On March 28, 2026, the Beaufort County Veterans Affairs Department partnered with Beaufort National Cemetery to host a Vietnam War Veterans Day Ceremony. The event was honored by a special guest speaker, Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Gen. James Livingston, USMC (Ret.).

We extend our deepest gratitude to all Vietnam veterans for their service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy.

James Livingston, USMC, ret., will be the guest speaker when the Beaufort County Veterans Affairs Department and Beaufort National Cemetery partner again to host a Vietnam War Veterans Day Ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, March 28, at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 1601 Boundary Street.

🚨 VA OVERPAYMENT SCAM ALERT – READ THIS 🚨

Veterans are being targeted by scammers pretending to be the VA, claiming you owe an “overpayment” and demanding immediate payment.

⚠️ Red Flags to Watch For:
❌ Urgent calls or emails demanding payment
❌ Requests for gift cards, Zelle, Cash App, or crypto
❌ Threats of arrest or loss of benefits
❌ Asking for your SSN or banking info
❌ Pressure to “act now”

👉 The VA will NEVER:
✔️ Demand payment by phone
✔️ Ask for gift cards or wire transfers
✔️ Threaten arrest
✔️ Ask for personal info over the phone

✅ If you truly owe a debt, the VA will notify you by official mail through the VA Debt Management Center, and you’ll have options like:
• Payment plans
• Waivers
• Hardship reviews

🛑 If you get a suspicious call:
1️⃣ Don’t pay
2️⃣ Don’t give info
