Many people don’t realize that one of the earliest Memorial Day observances in America was led by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865.

After the Civil War, freed men and women gathered to properly bury Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp. They cleaned the grounds, built a proper burial enclosure, decorated the graves with flowers, and held a memorial procession attended by thousands.

Before it was called Memorial Day… it was an act of remembrance, dignity, and respect.

That history matters deeply here in Southeast Texas.

Many historic Black cemeteries across our region contain the stories of veterans, laborers, church leaders, families, and entire communities whose contributions were often overlooked or forgotten. Preservation is more than cutting grass or repairing fences. It is protecting history that cannot be replaced once it is lost.

At Community Cemeteries Inc., we believe these sacred spaces deserve care, documentation, restoration, and respect — not just for the past, but for future generations who deserve to know where they came from.

This Memorial Day, remember that honoring the dead has always also been about honoring the people and communities connected to them.

Did You Know?

John P. Odom — the man Odom Academy is named after — is buried right here in Blanchette Cemetery.

Before there was a modern school building… before integration… before the resources were equal — there were educators who built institutions from almost nothing.

John P. Odom was one of those leaders.

As an early African American educator in Beaumont’s Pear Orchard community, he helped lay the foundation for Black education during segregation.

His work contributed to the development of what would become a lasting educational legacy in our city.

Today, students attend Odom Academy — but many don’t realize that the man behind the name rests in one of our historic community cemeteries.

Blanchette Cemetery is more than a burial ground.

It is a record of leadership.

A record of sacrifice.

A record of builders.

At Community Cemeteries, we don’t just cut grass — we preserve history.
When we maintain these grounds, we are honoring educators, pastors, veterans, entrepreneurs, and families who shaped Beaumont long before recognition came.

If you or your family have loved ones buried in Blanchette or other historic cemeteries, reach out to us. Let’s make sure their stories are told.
