Judge Gordon Friesz - 317th District Court

Judge Gordon Friesz - 317th District Court Hon. Gordon Friesz - Judge, 317th District Court - Jefferson County, Texas Since 2017, I have been a partner at Wells, Peyton & Partain, LLP in Beaumont.

I am excited to formally announce that I am running as a Republican to be the next Judge of the 317th District Court in Jefferson County, Texas in the upcoming 2022 election. Judge Larry Thorne has previously indicated that he will be retiring when his current term ends December 31, 2022. Since 2004, I have practiced law in Jefferson County and have been honored to represent hundreds of clients fr

om Port Arthur to Beaumont, Nederland to China, and all other areas of Jefferson County. I was born and raised in Nederland, graduated from Lamar University, and I taught and coached in our local public schools before making the decision to attend law school. After graduating from South Texas College of Law in 2003, I decided to establish my practice in Jefferson County in order to serve the people of this county that have given so much to me. Over the course of my practice, I have handled hundreds of divorce, custody and other family law cases in Jefferson County courts and have been called on by my colleagues to mediate and assist in settling many of their cases during my career. I have been honored to be voted by the local bar and its attorneys to serve as a director, treasurer and vice president of the Jefferson County Bar Association, and I previously served as the Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Jefferson County Bar Association. Over the course of my career, I have been active in the Jefferson County pro bono program, and have most enjoyed being able to participate in National Adoption Day for several years and help worthy clients grow their families. I am a past board member of CASA of Southeast Texas, the United Way of Mid and South Jefferson County, and have coached and volunteered in several local youth organizations with my children. I am humbled to have the support of the vast majority of the family law attorneys in Jefferson County, as well as numerous other members of the local bar that I have worked with over the years. In 2021 I became a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, an honor extended to less than one percent of practicing Texas attorneys based on their professionalism, service and commitment to the law. I have dedicated my adult and professional life to working with and for families and children in Jefferson County, as a teacher, volunteer and attorney. During my career, I have been blessed to be able to help hundreds of families in Jefferson County resolve their family law matters and guide them through difficult times. I am very proud of the service I have provided to my clients and the experience I bring to this position. I have the experience, familiarity with Jefferson County and its residents, and support of the local bar to serve as the next Judge of the 317th District Court. I hope to continue my service to the community, citizens and children of Jefferson County and would be humbled to be able to hear and decide these difficult cases and help families resolve these matters with dignity and respect. I have been married to my wife, Shelley, for 24 years and we reside in Nederland. We have a 23 year old son, Zack, and a 14 year old daughter, Reagan, who both attended Nederland High School and have been active in various activities in and out of school. They are the pride and joy of our lives and a big part of why I want to serve as Judge and help make Jefferson County the best place it can possibly be.

I am very humbled that I will run unopposed for re-election in the upcoming 2026 election. I did not draw an opponent in either the Republican Primary or general election by yesterday’s filing deadline.

It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as the Judge of the 317th District Court. I am extremely grateful to be able to have the opportunity to continue to serve the people of Jefferson County for another four-year term and for the trust they have put in me to do this job.

Hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Today I submitted my application to be placed on the ballot for re-election in 2026. Serving as judge of the 317th District Court has been the greatest honor of my professional life and I hope that I have done enough to earn another term. I would be humbled if the voters of Jefferson County decide to grant me that opportunity and allow me to continue in this position.

I am pleased to announce that I will be seeking another term as the Judge of the 317th District Court in the November 2026 election. In 2022, the voters of Jefferson County gave me the honor of being the presiding judge of this court and I hope to humbly show that I am deserving of another term. I am proud of my record and the programs that have been put in place to increase docket efficiency, improve access to justice by unrepresented parties, and partnerships that have been created to help juvenile offenders. I would be honored to have your support and vote in next year’s election.

Pretty cool view from the bench from earlier this week. The courtroom was packed for the adoption of three very blessed kids by their loving and selfless family. They mentioned being foster parents and I was happy to kindly correct them and let them know they are just parents now. And, very lucky ones at that. Congratulations to all.

Catching up on a few adoptions from the last few weeks. Congratulations to these very blessed children and God bless their selfless and loving parents. Lives changed for the better. Without a doubt the best thing that we get to do in court. I am so grateful to play a very small part in these cases.

This week Judge Raquel West and I had the opportunity to give a presentation to judges from across the State of Texas about how we handle cases with litigants that are not represented by attorneys. We have been very successful in helping parties without lawyers navigate the legal system in Jefferson County.

It was a huge honor to be asked by the Texas Center for the Judiciary to talk about our policies and practices and how we have efficiently and effectively handled our dockets and have given unrepresented parties the opportunity to resolve their cases. I believe we handle our courts very well here and I appreciate the chance to share that with other Texas judges.

The Court’s dockets for Tuesday (January 21, 2025) and Wednesday (January 22, 2025) are cancelled due to the forecasted inclement weather and potentially hazardous road conditions. We will do our best to reschedule all cases on these dockets as soon as possible. Please contact the court coordinator to reschedule or if you have any questions.
