On this day, Beaumont Fire Rescue, Texas celebrated pushing in new Engine 6 and the museum is celebrating pushing out Engine 55 REO Light Truck. The Light Truck will be making the long journey to Manchester, Connecticut to be restored by the talented individuals at Gasper Automotive.

The light truck was the first search and rescue vehicle and was created by Beaumont Firefighters and Engineers in 1931. This engine responded to both the New London School Explosion in 1937 and the Texas City Explosion in 1947. Walter Cronkite made his break in journalism when he hitched a ride on the Light Truck, dressed as a fireman to cover the New London School Explosion since media was not allowed.

In 1965 the REO chassis was sold at city auction and replaced by a GMC chassis and continued to serve the Beaumont Fire Department until the 80's. In 2015 the original chassis was found in a field located in upstate New York and purchased by the museum to reunite the Light Truck to its original chassis.

Years have gone by and some restoration efforts were made but unfortunately Engine 55 found it's way to Station 3, unfinished and in pieces.

I made this project my personal mission to bring Engine 55 back to life and back in the museum where it was originally created. After so many failed attempts and setbacks....3 years later I am so proud to see this is happening!!!

🌶🌶🌶IT'S TIME!!!! Tag your hometown fire department, first responders, local businesses and foodies!!! The Fire Museum of Texas is excited to announce our First Annual Fire Museum of Texas Chili Cookoff!! This event is particularly significant for us as we celebrate the life and legacy of our dearly loved Allison Getz.

Allison Getz, our esteemed former board president, dedicated over 15 years of service to our museum, championing education and promoting fire safety and prevention among young visitors and families. Our Children’s Activity Center, established on the second floor of our museum in 1986, serves this purpose, welcoming over 14,000 students from Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana yearly, forming the cornerstone of our educational programs.

In honor of Allison’s profound legacy, which continues to inspire following her passing last year, the museum board has embarked on transforming the center into a premier S.T.E.M. educational facility, renaming it the Allison Getz Fire Education Center, with event proceeds allocated to support this transformative project.

The first annual Fire Museum of Texas Chili Cook-Off will be held here at the museum on Saturday February 22, 2025 from 9am to 3pm. We invite you to show support through various participation options. We are currently seeking cooking teams, event sponsors, donations and volunteers.

For more information please contact Dana Ward, Fire Museum of Texas Coordinator, at 409-880-3927 or email [email protected].

Special thanks to Mike Getz, our VIP Judge, for his blessing ❤️
