Happy National Dog Day! Did you know the Beaumont Fire Department had a mascot? Jiggs (or Bob, depending on the source) was the Fire Department mascot from roughly 1921 to 1927. A brown and white terrior, Jiggs would ride with the firemen in the fire wagons when ever they were called. He was clearly loved by the fire department as we can see from the third photograph, which depicts a funeral that was held when he passed.

Henry Millard, ca. 1840. Millard was one of the founders of Beaumont and is often credited with the naming given that his wife's maiden name was also Beaumont. He was the second Jefferson County Judge and fought in Sam Houston's army during the Texas Revolution.

Did you know the first black woman to join the U.S. Military was Cathay Williams? She disguised herself as a man and enlisted in November 1866 under the name William Cath. She is the only documented female Buffalo Soldier. We learned a great deal last night at Roscoe Compton's talk on the Buffalo Soldiers.
