SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS~JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

• DRESS FOR SHOPPING
** Wear comfortable clothing with a number of pockets. You can carry your money, ID and credit cards in your pocket.
** Avoid flashy jewelry whether it is real or costume.
** Comfortable shoes are a must.

• AVOID CARRYING PURSES
** Leave your hands free to deal with kids and packages, etc. Definitely avoid shoulder purses of any kind. If you must carry a purse, carry a short strap hand held purse, a small sling bag or f***y pack. Carry only the essentials in your small bag so that you can keep it close to your body.
** Instead of a wallet, secure your cash in a money clip in your front pocket. If you must carry a wallet, wear snug fitting pants or carry it in your coat breast pocket so that you would feel if someone tried to steal it out of your pocket.

• CASH, CHECKS AND CREDIT CARDS
** Carry cash in denominations no larger than a $20.00 bill. If your bank gives you larger denominations, have them exchange it before you leave.
** Carry your cash in various pockets and never pull all of your cash out at once.
** If you carry a check book, make sure that you keep up with the check numbers and the recipients. This will assist you in canceling your checks.
** Carry only the credit cards that you need while you are shopping. Always log your credit card numbers with the 800 numbers and keep the information in a safe place just in case you have to cancel your cards.

• LOCK YOUR DOORS AT ALL TIMES
** Most vehicles with electric door locks can be set to stay locked when you put your car in park.

• HIDE YOUR VALUABLES
** Guns, cash, purses, coins, jewelry, cell phones, camera's, backpacks, GPS systems and laptop computers are very popular items for theives to steal.

• 911 IS A FREE CALL ON YOUR CELL PHONE
** Even cell phones with no data service can be used to call 911. Keep a cell phone charged and with you if at all possible.

Jefferson County SWAT, Aviation and K-9 hosted a Tactical Tracking and K9 Integration course this week.

Law Enforcement from Lumberton PD, Port Neches PD and Chambers County Sheriff's Office also participated in the training.

Multi-agency training is important. At times, we are called to assist each other and training with a unified response is crucial for the safety of the first responders and the community.

Many thanks to Nome Mayor Abney and our local partners for hosting this delicious meal for first responders!

Also, we appreciate the kind words of encouragement from Commissioner Erickson and Commissioner Pierce.

Commissioner Pierce was awarded a plaque from the City of Nome for his many years of service helping SETX not just as a Commissioner but as the Entergy Go-To guy during area disasters!

We appreciate you all!

🚨ANOTHER SCAM ALERT🚨

Today, a Jefferson County resident called to report that a scammer contacted her attempting to get her to immediately pay a bill over the phone using a debit or credit card. The scammer had some of her personal information, including medical information. The scammer was a male with a thick Indian accent who kept asking her if she could do that.

Once she realized that it may not be a legitimate call, the potential victim hung up on the caller and called the medical facility to inquire about any outstanding balance. Once she learned that she did not owe any money to the medical facility, she realized the call was a scam.

ADVISORY - If anyone contacts you attempting to collect money, do not comply. Hang up, just as this lady did, and contact the business directly.

Once a scammer gets your financial information, it is easy to steal your money. At times, these scammers request that you go to a local store and purchase a cash card. They then obtain the card information and steal the funds.

Again, never give your information to anyone who contacts you. Always contact the business directly.

We ask that you share this information with your community, your neighbors, your church members and other organizations that you may be involved with.

JCSO Week in Review

Whew! It's been a busy week out and about in the community. It started with a visit to our friends at Sabine Pass ISD on Monday!

Monday night we were honored to attend the Cub Scout Pack 10 meeting where they were introduced to two of the JCSO K-9 Divisions finest.

We then had a blast on Tuesday and Wednesday with our partners with the YMBL at the annual Babe Zaharias Relays held at Beaumont United High School. See some videos in the comments.

We finished up yesterday evening with our partners at Exxon-Mobil and BISD at the 2023 Family STEM night at Ford Park.

We have met so many smart, talented, enthusiastic students this week that were eager to learn about law enforcement and its many facets.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit Rescues Stranded Boaters...

On Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at approximately 7:45 p.m., JCSO Marine Deputies were dispatched to stranded boaters taking on water near the Jettys.

Deputies searched the area and were able to locate three male subjects standing on the jettys near their boat. Due to the strong waves and winds, the boat was partially up on the rocks.

Deputies threw the boat Captain a line and he tied it to his boat. Once the line was secure, the three stranded boaters were instructed to get back onto their boat and prepare to be transferred to the JCSO boat.

The JCSO boat Captain was able to maneuver the stranded boat off of the jettys and into a safer area where they could transfer the boaters onto the JCSO vessel.

While still fighting choppy seas, and the wake of a passing ship, JCSO Deputies were able to successfully rescue the boaters from their boat and safely secure them onto the JCSO vessel.

JCSO Deputies towed the disabled fishing boat and the three passengers safely to the four-way stop boat ramp in Sabine Pass, Texas. The boaters were able to load their boat onto their trailer.

The Captain of the fishing vessel was from Florida and visiting relatives here in Southeast Texas. There were no injuries sustained during the incident and all three boaters were very thankful for the rescue.

SCAM ALERT 10/06/2023 - They are at it again!

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has received complaints in reference to a male caller falsely identifying himself as Deputy Miller with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. He is trying to scam citizens out of money.

The scammer claims that the citizen has a warrant for their arrest (usually due to a missed jury duty date) and if they want to avoid arrest, they can pay the fine up front.

Scammers usually instruct the victim to purchase a cash card and take care of the fine by phone. Once you purchase these cards and give the scammer your information, your money is gone!

NEVER IMMEDIATELY GO TO THE STORE AND PURCHASE A CASH CARD TO PAY SOMEONE OVER THE PHONE.

NO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY will try to solicit funds over the phone for any purpose. These phone numbers appear to be coming from the 409 area code however, spoof apps can make a call appear from anywhere. Please speak with family members and friends and share this information.

NEVER give anyone who calls you your personal nor financial information.

We asked that everyone share this post within their communities, churches, Civic organizations, etc.
