Day in 1852, Mary O’Bannon Smith Caldwell, grandmother of Mamie McFaddin Ward, was born in New Castle, Kentucky to Nicholas and Eliza Peter Foree Smith.

She married James Lewis Caldwell in Kanawha County, West Virginia in 1871, and they raised six children together in Huntington, West Virginia.

Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames but was reported to focus more intently on her home, family, and friends than outside civic organizations.

According to the book, “Representative Women of The South,” published in 1927, Mary was “a representative of Southern womanhood in its fullest and highest development, devoted to her home and family…” and her home was filled with a “true spirit of graciousness…” 💚

We can’t wait for this Thursday’s Lecture - First Ladies: Impact and Legacies by Anita McBride, so today we wanted to celebrate the first ladies of the McFaddin-Ward House, Ida Caldwell McFaddin and her daughter Mamie McFaddin Ward.

Elegant and sophisticated, Ida was a natural leader in Beaumont society, and Mamie followed in her mother’s footsteps. Their home was the place to be for countless social gatherings, formal dinners and exquisite teas with the ladies each shining in their hostess duties.

Like many of our nation’s first ladies, Ida and Mamie dedicated much of their time to community service and charitable works. Both ladies were active in numerous organizations, including serving on the board of the Beaumont Children’s Home and volunteering for the Red Cross during both world wars. Ida was also highly active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Mamie served in leadership roles for the Magnolia Garden Club.

The McFaddin ladies devoted a great deal of time to preserving the beauty and elegance of their home. Thanks to their care, and Mamie’s generous contribution, our museum continues to be a source of inspiration and education today and for generations to come.

in 1901, the Lucas Gusher blew in on Spindletop Hill in Beaumont to change history and usher in the Texas Oil Boom.

The news was all over the world in just days. Beaumont’s population jumped from less than 10,000 to 50,000.

W.P.H. McFaddin was part owner of the tract of land where the Lucas Gusher came in, and the discovery enhanced and diversified the fortunes of the McFaddin family.

His daughter, Mamie McFaddin Ward, who was five at the time, shared her memories of the historic event in an interview conducted by Jan Reitz in 1982:

“We knew when the oil boom came in, of course she (her mother Ida) knew, and Father, because it came in on his land, McFaddin-Wiess-Kyle land…I can remember thinking the world had come to an end. I was so young it didn’t mean anything to me, but I remember Father thinking it would ruin his ranch land, to raise cattle, it would ruin it. The young men and the people who moved here with the oil boom and the families, we knew them. They were friends of Mother’s and Father’s, so we knew them and entertained them. Oh, there were so many families that came here. ”
