About twenty-five miles north of Two Harbors on Highway 61 is the town of Beaver Bay. Established as a permanent settlement in 1856, Beaver Bay is the oldest continuous settlement along the North Shore of Lake Superior, and it was home to commercial fishing, logging, and mining. Mining and fishing activity continues to this day.
Beaver Bay was also the home of John Beargrease. Beargrease, the son of an Ojibwe chief, delivered mail with his brothers along the North Shore from Two Harbors to Grand Marais, with occasional deliveries to Grand Portage via dog sled in the winter months. The Beargrease Dog Sled Race that runs from Duluth to Grand Portage is named after him.
