Beaver Dam Paid-on-Call Firefighters

Last night, your Beaver Dam Firefighters worked on vertical ventilation and forcible entry.

Firefighters use vertical ventilation to clear smoke and heat from a structure, aiding in extinguishment. Firefighters used a department made roof prop and became comfortable operating one our rotary saws to cut holes in the roof.

Firefighters also practiced forcible entry, using a set of irons ( axe and a halligan bar) to force force open inward and outward swinging doors.

All skills that are worked on are considered perishible skills. This means that we become less proficient in using them if we do not continually practice and refine these skills.

Search and Rescue training over the weekend for our recruits ran by the one and only Tom “Blatz” McMenamin. Blatz retired as a career firefighter in Milwaukee and came to Beaver Dam and joined the Paid On Call ranks. His lessons are invaluable and he is an amazing asset to the City of BD.

Today our probationary members were put through live fire training. Our training facility once again proves to be a great asset to our professional development!

Yesterday four of our members headed north to Wisconsin Rapids for fall clean up at the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial. This park is 100% volunteer maintained, and is one of the most beautiful parks in the state. It was an honor to read the names of all those who have been lost in our state. If you ever get the chance to visit it, we highly recommend visiting! Thank you to Lieutenant Smith, Lieutenant Nehr, Firefighter Schoenberger and Firefighter McMenamin for your efforts!

Last night BDFD crews trained on simulated city fire responses. Our new training tower is a vital component of our training mission and culture! Crews conducted engine and truck operations simultaneously on multiple scenarios.
