BEAVER DAM AWARDED GRANTS
Beaver Dam Mayor Paul Sandefur announced on Friday that the city has been awarded two grants totaling over $1.75 million. Proceeds from the two grants will be used to construct an inclusive playground and a separate splash pad at the Beaver Dam Park. Both facilities will include ADA accessible and sensory elements making the two functional for all children.
City officials have been working for several years to bring these two facilities to fruition. Last year when it was learned that possible funding could be available to the city, commissioner Kevin Davis agreed to spearhead the project working with GRADD to develop the City’s grant package. Commissioner Davis traveled to Frankfort this spring to make an official presentation to the Kentucky Department for Local Government. DLG approved the project this spring and final approval from the federal government was announced this week.
Funding for this project includes an award from the federal National Park Service Land & Water Conservation fund in the amount of $888,548.54. A second grant was awarded by the state of Kentucky to assist in covering the City’s required match for just over $870,000. The total amount of city funds required is just over $17,000.
City officials put in a good deal of time, effort and patience into obtaining these grants. However, Mayor Sandefur stresses that patience is still needed as federal funding such as the Land and Water Conservation Grant could take up to a year to go through all the channels before the city receives the funds. In the meantime, final design and planning will be taking place.
