Captain Smith was one of two firefighters injured on April 5th when the fire tanker truck rolled down an embankment amid zero visibility that occurred as they were on their way to help the response to the Beaver River wildfire in Beaver County. Both Smith and another firefighter were burned in the accident and flown to the burn unit of University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. Captain Smith was improving after skin grafts and was allowed to go back home on April 19th. On April 27th he had a checkup and everything looked positive, and he was supposed to go back for a follow up in a week. Captain Smith took a turn for the worse and succumbed to his injuries on May 8, 2022.
