It is with great sadness that the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of former Chief Deputy Ralph Ramanna.

Chief Deputy Ramanna dedicated his career and his life to serving the citizens of Beaver County and to the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office. His commitment, leadership, and dedication helped shape this office into what it is today, and his contributions will not be forgotten.

Ralph was respected by his colleagues and will be deeply missed by the members of the Sheriff’s Office, as well as the many people whose lives he touched throughout his years of service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ralph’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who knew and loved him during this difficult time.

The Beaver County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls regarding a scam being perpetrated by individuals claiming to be Beaver County Deputy Sheriff’s.

The caller advised the victims that there is a warrant out for them for failing to appear for federal jury duty. The caller advises that the warrant can be resolved by making an immediate payment, via western union, to account numbers they provide. The caller id has been “spoofed” to indicate that it is the Sheriff’s Office. These perpetrators are convincing and even have police radios/scanners as background noise during the calls.

The Beaver County Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT have anything to do with federal grand juries. We DO NOT take payments for warrants over the phone or in person.

Unfortunately, this has become a common practice. Callers purport themselves to be Sheriff’s Deputies to scam the recipient of the call out of money. Generally, the scammers have used lines like the following:
1. There is a warrant for your arrest because you have failed to report for court; or jury duty.
2. You must pay a bail.

The intention of the scammer is to scare the victim, with one of the aforementioned lies, into paying the amount they have claimed is owed. They are trying to access bank account information, credit card numbers, or trying to get money from a PayPal type account number, gift cards, Western Union, etc.

BEFORE you give anyone your personal information, or money, always call the agency the caller purports to be. As in this case, if the caller claims that we have a warrant for you, please call the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office at 724.770.4602 or Beaver County Emergency Services at 724.775.0880.

Below is a summary of how to safeguard you from becoming the victim of any scam:

1. Under no circumstances should a resident ever provide any personal information over the phone when receiving calls. If you have any question as to the legitimacy of the call, get the individuals name and position, hang up and then obtain legitimate contact information for the company/agency, through independent means, and re-contact them. As in this case, if they say there is a warrant for your arrest in Beaver County, contact the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office.

2. NEVER provide credit card information, social security numbers, your date of birth, bank information, gift card numbers, etc. to anyone with whom you have not initiated the call.

3. Note any telephone number of the caller displayed on your caller ID. Beware, however, that many scammers “spoof” the numbers of a legitimate entity to make you think the call is from who they claim to be.

4. Document the conversation with the suspect.

5. Disconnect without providing any financial and/or personal information.

6. Criminals are able to access much of our personal information simply with the use of personal computers and Web sites.

Last night, another American police officer made the ultimate sacrifice.

Sergeant Scott Ries responded to what began as a disturbance call—one more plea for help from a community relying on those willing to answer when others run away. Instead, he and fellow officers were met with gunfire.

Sergeant Ries gave his life protecting others.

This heartbreaking tragedy also claimed the lives of a woman and her 13-year-old child. Four responding law enforcement officers and a police K-9 were wounded in the violent attack. While we are grateful the injured officers are expected to recover, the pain left behind by this senseless act will never fully heal.

For 11 years, Sgt. Ries faithfully served the citizens of Rittman with honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting his community. He left home knowing every shift carried risk, yet he answered the call anyway. That is the burden America's law enforcement officers willingly carry every single day.

Behind every badge is a family that waits for a safe return. Behind every line-of-duty death is a department forever changed, a community in mourning, and brothers and sisters in blue left carrying the weight of another empty chair at roll call.

Today, we ask you to join us in praying for the family of Sergeant Scott Ries, the Rittman Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the Medina County Sheriff's Office, every officer involved in this tragedy, and the families of the other innocent victims whose lives were stolen.

May we never become numb to these tragedies. May we never forget the price that is paid to keep our communities safe.

Citizens are getting calls from "Tony GUY" claiming they are from the Beaver Co. Sheriff's Office.
We do not contact people over the phone for missing something at the courthouse.
If you owe money for fines, or anything else, we would never ask for the money, nor do we handle money at all.
Inform the caller that you will be calling the Sheriff's Office to confirm their statements. I am sure they will hang up on you faster than you can hang up on them. That would be a good indication they are scammers. Then block and report number.
