I just got off the phone with Ms. Monteblanco and congratulated her on her win. I also let her know that I am ready and willing to help her champion real meaningful protections for our community regarding accountability for ICE and other policy goals that will help our community stay safe.
She told me she agrees with me that we can institute these protections and hold ICE accountable, so I’m hopeful we will see real change on that front!
Now, to all of the members of the community who took a chance on me: thank you! To my team; Will, Nikku, Madison, Barbie, and Nadia; there is no way we could have made it this far without you. Thank you for guiding me, supporting me, and taking our message to our community. I knew fighting back against the establishment wasn’t going to be easy, but having you there with me made this fight possible.
To my family; Nilofar, Golnesa, and Kasra; I fought this fight for you, and I won’t stop fighting. This isn’t the end; this is just the beginning. We will live in a county where you feel safe and can thrive. I love you so much.
Nilofar, aziz-e-delam, you showed up more than anyone should ever have to. Thank you for going on this journey with me. Thank you for picking up the slack at home, for never wavering, and for always pushing me forward. Thank you for believing in me. I love you more than words can describe, and there is no one else I would ever want by my side.
To the community members and organizations who stood with me, thank you. I know this isn’t the outcome we wanted, but we showed the establishment that they can’t take us lightly; we will continue to demand action. I hope you will continue to show up with me and for our community. This campaign may be over, but our fight is not.
