Meet Firefighter & Public Education Director Kevin Drehmel

Kevin has served with the Becker Fire Department for 9 years and was recently named the department’s Firefighter of the Year.

Becoming a firefighter was something Kevin dreamed about as a kid. His favorite part of serving is knowing that what they do matters. Whether it’s a major emergency or something that may seem small, there’s an opportunity to make a difference for someone who needs it. He also values the camaraderie and sense of family within the department and serving alongside people who genuinely care about their community.

Kevin especially enjoys technical rescue and live burn training and appreciates every opportunity to continue learning and become a better firefighter. His favorite kind of call? “The ones where everyone is okay.”

What keeps him coming back is the opportunity to help people in their time of need and knowing that being there when someone needs help can make a difference.

Outside of the fire department, Kevin is the pastor of Harvest Church in Big Lake. He also operates an adult foster care home, installs flooring, and co-founder of Compassion Connection, a local nonprofit serving foster, adoptive, and kinship families.

When he isn’t working or serving, Kevin enjoys working out, traveling, spending time with his family, and going to live shows. He could happily eat breakfast food for all three meals of the day. His favorite movies include Seabiscuit and Point Break (1991), and his go-to drink is a white chocolate mocha.

Kevin appreciates that Becker is a great place to raise a family. He especially values the way the community supports local businesses and first responders and how willing people are to step up and help one another.

His message to residents: “See a need. Fill a need. Look for opportunities to help the people around you when there’s a need. I believe God has given each of us a purpose and opportunities to make a difference right where we are. You don’t have to be a firefighter to serve your community—sometimes it simply starts with noticing someone who could use a hand and being willing to help.”

Investing in Our Community’s Future

Yesterday was a great reminder that being a first responder is about more than responding when something goes wrong—it’s about building relationships before we’re ever needed.

Our Fire Department had the opportunity to partners with Sherburne County and Becker Police Departments and some of our local daycares.

We enjoyed spending time with the kids, talking about what we do, showing them our equipment, and helping them become familiar with the people behind the uniforms. For some children, seeing a firefighter in full gear or a police officer with all of their equipment can be intimidating. By taking the time to meet them in a safe and fun environment, we hope to replace that fear with trust, confidence, and understanding.

We are incredibly grateful to join with our Police Departments and to the daycare staff for welcoming us and coming together. These may seem like small moments, but we believe they are an important part of building a stronger, safer community.

We don’t just serve our community—we invest in it. And there’s no better investment than our children.

TRAINING FOR WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

Our firefighters spent training night sharpening critical skills with door breaching and interior fire attack training. Crews practiced gaining entry through secured doors and then transitioning into interior fire attack—working on communication, teamwork, hose advancement, and coordinated movement in conditions designed to prepare us for real emergencies.

Training like this gives our firefighters the opportunity to build confidence, strengthen skills, and work together as a team so we're ready when our community needs us.

Meet Firefighter Zach Beaumaster

Zach has been serving with the Becker Fire Department for 3½ years. He was inspired to become a firefighter by friends already serving in the fire service and by the opportunity to give back to the community.

His favorite part of serving is being part of a team made up of incredible individuals who work together with a shared purpose. What keeps him coming back is the amazing Becker community and the opportunity to continue serving the people who make it such a great place to call home.

Outside of the department, Zach works as a correctional officer. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, coaching, and spending time with his family. His favorite meal is breakfast food, he enjoys watching sports, and his beverage of choice is a cup of black coffee.

One of Zach's favorite things about Becker is its small-town camaraderie and the way people come together to support one another.

His message to residents:
"Try to find ways to give back to your community."

Meet Firefighter Austin Knutson

Austin has been serving with the Becker Fire Department for 7 years. His inspiration to become a firefighter came from watching the movie Backdraft, which sparked a passion for serving others and ultimately led him to join the department.

One of Austin's favorite parts of serving is protecting the community he grew up in. Knowing he's able to give back to his hometown makes the role especially meaningful.

When asked what keeps him coming back, Austin didn't hesitate: "It's the best job I've ever had."

Outside of the department, Austin works as a machinist. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, relaxing around a campfire, and spending time outdoors. His favorite meal is steak and potatoes, his favorite show is Tacoma FD, and you'll often find him with a Monster Energy drink in hand.

Austin says his favorite thing about Becker is simple—it's home.

His message to residents:
"Thank you for all of your support. It means a great deal to our department and the firefighters who proudly serve this community."

Meet Firefighter Mike Holtslander

Mike has been serving with the Becker Fire Department for 6 years. He was inspired to become a firefighter because of his desire to help those in need and give back to the community. His favorite part of serving is the people he serves alongside. Mike values the men and women of the department who share the same passion for helping others during difficult times.

When it comes to training, Mike especially enjoys live house burns and auto extrication training. These hands-on experiences help prepare firefighters for real emergencies and reinforce the teamwork that makes the department successful.

What keeps him coming back year after year is knowing that what he does truly matters. Mike finds purpose in being there for people on some of their worst days and takes pride in knowing he has made a difference when it mattered most.

Outside of the department, Mike works as a machinist. He enjoys riding motorcycles, traveling, and spending time with his kids. His favorite meal is chicken enchilada pasta, his favorite movie is Tombstone, and his go-to drink is an espresso with caramel creamer.

One of Mike's favorite things about the Becker community is the people. He appreciates the support shown at department open houses and community events, sharing that seeing families take the time to connect with firefighters and show appreciation is a meaningful reminder of why they serve.

His message to residents: "I'm proud to serve as a firefighter for our community and be there when you need us. Please take a few minutes to keep your family safe by checking your smoke alarms, having an emergency plan, and never hesitating to call for help when you need it. We're always here for you."

Meet Firefighter Bret Lommel

Bret has been serving with the Becker Fire Department for 9 years. His passion for firefighting started when he was a kid. His uncle served on the Monticello Fire Department and often brought Bret to the station. Those experiences inspired him to become a firefighter and serve his own community one day.

What Bret enjoys most about serving is being able to help people on what may be one of the worst days of their lives and doing whatever he can to make it a little better. His favorite training is live burn exercises because it's rewarding to see all of the department's training come together in a realistic environment. He enjoys seeing how quickly a fire can be brought under control and how effectively the Becker Fire Department works as a team to get the job done.

What keeps him coming back year after year? The people. Bret says the department is like a family he can always count on.

Outside of the department, Bret works as a Program Engineer at the Xcel Nuclear Plant. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and spending time at the lake with his family. His favorite snack is a Snickers bar, his favorite show is MeatEater, and his drink of choice is Powerade.

Bret appreciates Becker's small-town feel and the kindness of the people who call it home. His message to residents: "Always close bedroom and interior doors. You'd be amazed at how much closing a door can help slow the spread of fire and protect the rest of your home."
