When you are forced to question the basic principles of the country that we used to love and respect, it's time to take a time out in the garden, pause, take a deep breath, and remember the beauty that abounds. These beautiful pea blossoms and the peas themselves posed beautifully this evening.

At least some haircuts are getting done during this time. Yup, it was sheep shearing day at the farm. The sheep were wonderfully coooerative (they might not have known it was going to snow this evening!). That’s Avery posing in the foreground. Can’t wait to turn the fiber into something knit or woven and wonderful.

A 'w**d' is a plant considered to be in the wrong place, but ‘wrong’ is in the eye of the beholder! Just because we want to control, doesn’t make the plant wrong. In fact, many
‘w**ds’, in all their glory right now, are beneficial and delicious.

No time to plant a garden? Head to your backyard and forage for these treasures: dandelion, chickw**d, garlic mustard.

Check out this link for more on chickw**d and others:
https://www.ediblewildfood.com/chickw**d.aspx

We'd love for you to share what you did with what you find (always be careful about foraging so you know you will be safe eating it).

For the locals:
The Town Board foresees the sight of sunflowers growing in as many front yards as possible, as a message of hope in a time of unprecedented crisis. It will be fun to be a part of this.

Sunflowers are the perfect symbol for our times: they are tall and beautiful, bloom all summer, are one of the most prolific sources of food to our valuable pollinator insects, and will provide the grower with an abundance of edible and delicious seeds within 100 days of planting. Kelloggs & Lawrence has seeds and they are a local treasure.

Just think, by mid-summer, Bedford will be in full-bloom with sunflowers, visible from our streets, each showing that we, as families and as a community, are resilient!

Johnny's Selected Seeds is our go-to source, but this year I couldn’t resist British Wonder from another great supplier. I even tried something I never do with peas, which was to plant them in pots and then transplant out. The BW have been doing fabulously well this way. If my grandchildren can do it, so can you -- and be sure to trellis!

The Bedford Conservation Board is providing packets of "free" MAMMOTH sunflower seeds (can grow up to 12' high) to Bedford residents, starting on Saturday, April 25th at the Town Office Building, 425 Cherry Street in Bedford Hills. (One packet for one family on the honor system.) They will be located in a container, near the entrance to the building.

*Please keep social distancing at the site.*

Each family is asked to plant the sunflowers facing the street. Come early summer, Bedford will be ablaze in sunflowers. And what a plant the sunflower is. It's tall and beautiful, it blooms all summer, it's one of the best plants to attract pollinating birds and insects, and within 100 days of planting, you can eat its delicious and nutritious seeds.
