Wharton Garden

Wharton Garden The Wharton Garden is a significant public garden that joins the Bedford Public Library and three loc Wharton, and the Wente Garden.

The Wharton Garden is a significant public garden that joins the Bedford Public Library and the three historic structures built either by or through the efforts of the Wharton family. The Wharton Garden was designed by Robert McDuffie of Virginia Tech. The Charles Wharton House, built circa 1886, is owned by Bedford County and was restored by the Historical Society. The John Wharton House, built i

n 1848, was purchased and restored by the Wharton Society. The garden features a gazebo, a winding brick pathway, sculptures, a boxwood maze, beautiful flowers, and unending beauty. The gardens are maintained through generous donations from the community and the tireless work of its volunteers. As part of the garden there is the "Secret Garden", a wildflower garden started by Ms. Dr. Wente was a local physician who hybridized daylilies, and the beautiful Wente Garden is in his honor. If you would like to financially support the Wharton Garden, please mail your donation to the attention of The Wharton Society at PO Box 713, Bedford, Virginia 24523. Please put Wharton Garden in the memo field of your check. The Wharton Society is a nonprofit 501c3 organization, and your donation is fully tax-deductible as allowed by the law. Thank you for supporting the Wharton Garden!

Did you know that the always beautiful Wharton Garden that we treasure, and you love so much is maintained year-round by a very small but mighty group of volunteers? They meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30-9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., weather permitting and holidays excluded (although you tend to find Fred there almost every weekday morning and sometimes weekend mornings too especially in the spring, summer and fall). Stop by and visit them to learn how you can volunteer even if it's only one day a week. We would love to have you join our volunteer team!

We invite you to visit the Wharton Garden to see all the beauty and fun we have to offer for adults and children as we have been very busy since spring and still going maintaining the Garden and working on our next project which will be the Wildflower Garden. Check out the Melody Garden where the newest bricks from our Brick Fundraiser and two new instruments were installed in the spring (Thank You!). The summer flowers, trees and bushes are showing their true beauty, and we are ready for July 4th! It will take you a while to take in all we have to offer so grab a sandwich at TKP located in the John Wharton House and enjoy! Thank you to our loyal volunteers and supporters who make this all possible for you!

Spring is ever closer, but winter never stops us in the Wharton Garden! Introducing our newest instruments in the Melody Garden, all ADA accessible. The Wharton Memorial Foundation is grateful to the Bedford Community Health Foundation for their $3000 grant award to help support the purchase of the colorful Serenade which includes a songbook for children (or even adults) to play or learn to play songs by matching color or color-coded annotated notes. We are also grateful to the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation for their $3500 grant award to help support the purchase of the Pegasus metallophone instrument. These two grant awards along with the proceeds from our 2024 Brick Fundraiser (Thank you for your orders!) allowed us to purchase and install these instruments in December 2024 and January 2025. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement regarding the bricks coming very soon!

The winter stems in our pollinator garden may look dull and dry. Step back when the sun is on last summer's petals and see the subtle textures and beauty of winter plants. Know that these hollow stems are hiding secrets. The plants in a pollinator garden are chosen for those secrets. We want plants that support the broadest range of pollinators. Every pollinator must lay her eggs where her tiny larvae can feed. And when the time is right, those larvae burrow into the stems to find places to survive the cold.
