Please join us for a public workshop later this month (2/25) at the Katonah Library.

We are almost finished with our tick distribution study and are putting on this event to share our results and get input from the community on our next steps.

You will also get a chance to learn more about tick ecology and tick-borne diseases, and what land trusts like the Gorge are doing to help keep us safe while in the woods.

Thanks to our partners, Nature.Health.Global and the Mohonk Preserve, and to the Land Trust Alliance.

Our Preserve and Trails are NOW closed until April 1st.

Volunteers needed for tick research!

Summer’s here – and so are the ticks!
We’re launching a new community-led pilot project to better understand where ticks occur —and we want you to help shape it. This is more than just a tick sampling event: we’re inviting local residents, park users, and volunteers to co-design and carry out the first phase of a research project that explores how deer, vegetation and land management affect where ticks show up. Come share your knowledge, learn about tick ecology, and work alongside scientists and land trust staff to build a locally grounded approach to tick research and surveillance. Whether you’re a nature lover, a public health advocate, or just curious—your input and involvement are essential. Let’s tackle this challenge together, from the ground up.

We value your participation and input! Please join Director of Research & Education Chris Nagy, Ph.D., and our partners at Mianus River Gorge Preserve for a two-part project.

The first session is for community planning on Saturday, June 21, at 9:30 a.m. The second session is for sampling (basically dragging a white sheet over the ground to see how many ticks we can collect) on Saturday, June 28, at 9:30 a.m. We hope you can come to both sessions.

This project is a partnership among Mianus River Gorge, Nature Health Global, and Mohonk Preserve.

In the time it takes to watch this video, we will have lost almost three football fields of natural lands to roads, houses, and poorly planned development. Mianus River Gorge and land trusts across the country are working hard to conserve our open spaces, but we need your help to keep . Learn how you can get involved: GainingGroundUSA.org

MRG's Budd Veverka contributed to a paper on the ecology of a potential biocontrol for the destructive hemlock wooly adelgid.

We are excited to share our recently published research looking at the winter survival and dormancy of the silver flies (specifically Leucotaraxis argenticollis). For this project we Lab reared flies and sent their puparia (where the larvae turn into adults) to collaborators all over the east coast. This research shows that L. argenticollis can survive winters on the east coast and emerge the following spring in time to feed on HWA eggs. While this was a controlled experiment it provides evidence that these flies will be able to survive and reproduce on the east coast! The highest levels of survival were measured in New York, and they were even able to survive cold Adirondack winters.
