Volunteers needed for tick research!
Summer’s here – and so are the ticks!
We’re launching a new community-led pilot project to better understand where ticks occur —and we want you to help shape it. This is more than just a tick sampling event: we’re inviting local residents, park users, and volunteers to co-design and carry out the first phase of a research project that explores how deer, vegetation and land management affect where ticks show up. Come share your knowledge, learn about tick ecology, and work alongside scientists and land trust staff to build a locally grounded approach to tick research and surveillance. Whether you’re a nature lover, a public health advocate, or just curious—your input and involvement are essential. Let’s tackle this challenge together, from the ground up.
We value your participation and input! Please join Director of Research & Education Chris Nagy, Ph.D., and our partners at Mianus River Gorge Preserve for a two-part project.
The first session is for community planning on Saturday, June 21, at 9:30 a.m. The second session is for sampling (basically dragging a white sheet over the ground to see how many ticks we can collect) on Saturday, June 28, at 9:30 a.m. We hope you can come to both sessions.
This project is a partnership among Mianus River Gorge, Nature Health Global, and Mohonk Preserve.
