Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! Come this Saturday to a DCR-led training session how-to on identifying tree pests -- 3/22, 10-11 a.m., Town Hall. Learn what to look for and how to protect your own lawn as well as the community's urban forest! A great idea if you're going to join the Town-wide Citizen Inventory this May, but for personal use, as well.

"Thoreau and the Language of Trees" (talk by Richard Higgins)-- Thoreau admired their beauty, saw poetry in their form and found mythic meaning in them. In this presentation, selections of Thoreau’s writings are matched to current and historic photographs and images of trees. The talk is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Saplings (whips) will be distributed free by Town/DPW. Hope you can come!

The brief ceremony will feature Bedford’s Citizen of the Year Don Marshall and the unveiling of the new JNT entry sign.

Lovers' Lane, Bedford Style! According to Lorrie Dunham, Jenks' Nature Trail was well known to those of us who grew up in Bedford and were teenagers when the new high school was built. To the romantic minded it was called, "Lover's Lane," as it had been for at least a generation before we came along. We even suggested that it be called that officially when the school opened, but by that time it ceased to look like a private pathway for lovers.

According to Ralph Hammond, "Back in 1953 or so, the three churches in Bedford joined together to hold likely the first Easter sunrise service [in the Jenks Nature Trail area]. Later in the morning an Easter egg hunt was held in the area where the Tot Lot now stands." The next year, it moved to Fawn Lake.

Bedford's Jenks Nature Trail The stone walls between the trees on either side of the path delineated the original "cow run." Now it serves high school students and their teachers, children on their way to play in nearby fields, library visitors and citizens on their way to Town Meeting.

There's a new Jenks Nature Trail group that's made up of people from Bedford's Arbor Resource Committee, Historic Preservation Commission, Library Board of Trustees, Planning Board, Department of Public Works and the community at large.
