Beginning July 1, 2026, BCPS official social media platforms will no longer allow commenting on posts. BCPS social media accounts are intended to function as informational channels and are not designated public forums for discussion, debate, or the submission of public comments. The disabling of comments shall be applied uniformly and without regard to viewpoint or content. Please note that BCPS social media accounts may not be regularly monitored and BCPS encourages anyone with specific questions or concerns involving a school, or division manner, to contact their school principal or the Coordinator of Communications, Mrs. Kristen Eanes ([email protected]). The Bedford County School Board will conduct its regular monthly meeting on September 10, 2026, in the School Administration Office Conference Room at 311 South Bridge Street, Bedford, VA 24523.

The regular monthly meeting will begin as scheduled at 5:00 PM. The agenda for the 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. portion of the meeting includes staff reports and Informational items. At 6:00 p.m. the Board will pause for the public comment portion of the meeting. When those items are complete, the Board will continue with Information, Action, and Consent items, as well as a closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters.

This Friday we will be introducing some fresh faces in the Forest zone! Join us in welcoming some of our newest team members!

Devon Hallberg comes to Jefferson Forest High School with almost a decade of experience. She is teaching Health and Physical Education to the 9th grade class. She’s a WVU Mountaineer fan with a love for all professional Pittsburgh sports. A fun fact about Devon is that she has studied abroad in Taiwan and Grenada. She’s wanted to be a PE teacher since she was 5 and she dressed up as her mom for career day! This year, she hopes to find a way for EVERYONE to enjoy physical activity!

Laura Tate is also new to Jefferson Forest High School, but has 21 years of experience in education.She will be teaching Biology and Environmental Sciences (9-11). She enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, camping, traveling to new countries, and watching her boys play soccer. A fun activity she’s excited to experience with her students this year is experimenting with bubbles to understand the cell membrane. This year, Laura hopes to make connections with students and ignite a love of the field of science.

Mary Brookes is a brand-new 6th-grade special education teacher at Forest Middle School this year. She loves reading, baking, and going on walks! Mary is a Liberty University graduate who loves working with kids and wants to help them grow through education.

Jackson Boyles is a new Algebra 1 teacher at Forest Middle School with 3 years of prior experience. He chose to become a teacher because he loves to coach, especially cross country, track, and swimming, and he wants to make a difference in students' lives. One of the projects Jackson is looking forward to teaching this year is a research project and presentation on authentic future job opportunities, including mathematical analysis of starting pay, bonuses, raises, and healthcare/benefits. He would like students to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of several roles, using graphs, charts, formulas, and artistic or performative engagement to communicate the findings. This year he hopes to become more confident in his classroom management and set up efficient systems to teach well while maintaining a work-life balance for his family, including his 10-month-old baby girl!

Congratulations to Mrs. Cindy Watson of Forest Middle School!

Mrs. Watson was named the inaugural Educator of the Year at the Virginia Aviation Awards! As a master teacher with the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, she has spent over a decade inspiring students through hands-on STEM learning and NASA-aligned programs. She also founded the Forest Drone Zone, empowering the next generation of pilots, engineers, and scientists.

Thank you, Mrs. Watson, for shaping the future of aviation and making Forest Middle School and Bedford County Public Schools proud!

Our second edition of Fresh Face Friday comes from Goodview Elementary School! Join us in welcoming some of our newest team members!

Skyler Bartell is brand new to the teaching world and is tackling 5th grade at GES this year. She chose to become a teacher because she loves the idea of spreading her love for learning to students and making an impact on their lives. Skyler loves to read, sing and play music, as well as spend time with her family. She plans to have an engaging classroom this year with group reading and readers’ theater days so the children can find their favorite ways to read.

Julie Pruitt is a veteran teacher, with 25 years of experience, coming to GES to teach adaptive curriculum (K-2). A fun activity she’s done in the past was planting gardens with her students and making sensory rooms. She’s excited to learn a new curriculum this year, since she’s moved to Bedford from out of state. A fun fact about Julie is that she’s pretty good with conversational Spanish!

Megan Hawley is another brand new teacher who will be jumping in headfirst into Kindergarten at GES this year. She loves running, gardening, doing art, and being outside! She has even snorkeled with sea turtles! She hopes this year to spend a lot of time outside learning. Megan hopes to accomplish helping her students learn, but also feel loved, this year!

GES continues to get great new talent this year. Mazie Roop is another first-year teacher for 2nd grade! She loves crafting and collecting postcards from places she’s traveled. Mazie wanted to become a teacher to foster a lifelong relationship with learning for her students. She plans to have her students do book reviews this year, which includes them practicing their argumentative writing skills!

The Bedford County School Board is currently assessing whether redistricting is necessary to address changing enrollment patterns across the division. Because growth is occurring unevenly, with some schools nearing capacity while others experience declining enrollment and become less efficient to operate, the Bedford County School Board is taking a data-driven approach to long-term planning.

To guide this evaluation, the Board voted on April 16, 2026, to issue an RFP for a third-party assessment and ultimately awarded the contract to Demographic Analytics Advisors (DAA) on June 11, 2026. DAA is currently gathering and analyzing data from local school information, county planning, and state sources. Following an initial work session on August 18, 2026, DAA will present its preliminary findings to the School Board on September 10, 2026.

Last week, we officially cut the ribbon on the amazing new facilities at Liberty High School and Staunton River High School!

This project is such a huge win for our students. Having these modern, top-tier spaces is going to give them so many new opportunities to learn, create, and thrive. You are definitely going to want to keep an eye out for all the upcoming performances in these new venues. They are going to be unforgettable!
A milestone like this truly takes a village, and we couldn't be more grateful. A big thank you to Senator Peake, Delegate Zehr, Delegate Griffin, present and past School Board members, and the Board of Supervisors who came out to show their support and help make this vision a reality.

We also have to give credit to the incredible teams who built and prepared these spaces. Jamerson-Lewis Construction, Dominion Seven Architects, Moore’s Electrical and Mechanical, and all the other hard-working contractors outdid themselves. And a very special shoutout to our extraordinary staff, both school and school administration. You all worked endlessly behind the scenes to make sure everything was spotless and running smoothly for today, and it really showed!

Thank you again to everyone who joined us to celebrate. The future is so bright for our students and our schools!

Congratulations to Bedford's Best Recipient, Coordinator of Construction & Maintenance, Taylor Bell!

Nomination: "Taylor is an exceptional leader and valued contributor to our school community. He consistently goes above and beyond his role by providing thoughtful support, expertise, and dedication to the success of our staff and school. His outstanding efforts are evident in the landscaping and grounds preparation completed for NLA’s 230th anniversary celebration, as well as his contributions to the 2026 building improvement projects. Taylor approaches each task with careful attention to detail, strong communication, and a collaborative mindset, ensuring that the unique needs of our school site are met with excellence. Taylor demonstrates a genuine commitment to doing what is best and right for our school community. He has generously donated his time, skills, and materials to support NLA, and his workmanship, reliability, and dedication are consistently recognized and appreciated by our school family. Recognizing a unique need for space renovation and preparation this summer, Taylor stepped forward on his own time to help us achieve our goals. He worked collaboratively with family and community members to coordinate improvements to the NLA office and teacher workroom, creating more functional and welcoming spaces for our staff. Taylor’s leadership, generosity, and commitment to service exemplify the qualities of an outstanding community partner. His efforts have made a lasting impact on NLA, and we are grateful for the care and dedication he brings to our school."
