The City of Bedford received notification from Tarrant County Public Health that a mosquito trapped in the 3700 block of Brookside Drive tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first of 2021. In response, Public Works staff will spray adulticiding, a type of insecticide used to control adult mosquitoes along the creek banks and City parks, within a quarter-mile radius of the trap tonight, July 9, at 10 p.m. Crews will also reapply larvicide treatment to the creeks and ponds within the area. If weather is not permitting, staff will complete the spraying and larvicide application over the weekend.

Residents in the affected neighborhoods will be notified by the community notification Bedford Alert system (www.bedfordtx.gov/bedfordalert).

When it comes to protecting yourself and your family from mosquitoes, always remember the "Four D's,โ€ as follows:

๐ŸฆŸ Dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. This is when mosquitoes are most active and are considered major feeding times.
๐ŸฆŸ Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside. For extra protection, you may want to spray thin clothing with repellent.
๐ŸฆŸ DEET is an effective EPA-registered active ingredient to look for in your insect repellent. Always wear repellent when outdoors and choose products that contain up to 20 percent DEET.
๐ŸฆŸ Drain standing water in your backyard and neighborhood - old tires, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters. These are mosquito-breeding sites.

Mosquitoes are most active during dusk and dawn, so take extra precaution during those times. You can also contact the Public Works Department at 817-952-2200 for more information about West Nile Virus or visit the cityโ€™s webpage for more information on mosquito control at www.bedfordtx.gov/mosquitocontrol.

Juneteenth Freedom Day!

We remember June 19, 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston to ensure all slaves were freed, effectively ending the practice of slavery in Texas.

Everyone enjoy today and stay safe!

On Thursday, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S. Juneteenth honors when the last slaves in the U.S. were informed of their freedom in Galveston on June 19, 1865.

On this date, President Abraham Lincolns' Emancipation Proclamation was publicly read two and a half years after it was signed on January 1, 1863. To learn more about the significance of Juneteenth please visit https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/historical-legacy-juneteenth.

Starting today, Bedford seniors ages 65 and older who live alone can enroll in the Bedford Police Departmentโ€™s new Senior Care Call program. This program is for seniors who would like to receive a phone call from Police Department Volunteers to check on their welfare twice a week.

Volunteers will conduct their semi-weekly phone calls on Wednesdays and Fridays, starting Wednesday, July 7. During the call, volunteers will ask seniors if they are OK; if they answer "yes" they may simply hang-up and continue with their day. However, if the senior expresses a concern, the volunteer will then determine what kind of need they have, and the appropriate assistance.

If the senior does not answer the phone or if the line is busy, volunteers will call back. If there is still no response when they call back, a volunteer will perform a safety check at the senior's residence. Seniors or family members may pick-up an application at the Bedford Police Department, 2121 L. Don Dodson Rd. or may fill out the online form at www.bedfordtx.gov/seniorcalls, where there is more detailed information about the program. For questions, please email [email protected].

I just received a message regarding a missing child. I couldnโ€™t understand the address or intersection. The repeat message option didnโ€™t work.
What happened off Forest Ridge tonight? We walked out our back gate and were told we were a โ€œdistraction.โ€ I was worried and asked the officer because of previous shootings very close. I do not fault the officer that said that as I think that was a โ€œgo back insideโ€ warning. We left and almost an hour later, officers were still there and towing the car. We canโ€™t be left in the dark with so many things down this street lately. I have a young child in my home and need to be sure he is safe.
Merry Christmas and thank you all for all that you do to keep our community safe. We appreciate you very much! May you and your families stay blessed ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

What an outstanding group of police officers! My Granddaughterโ€™s 5th birthday was today and the kindness shown by the Bedford Police Department will never be forgotten. Iโ€™m sorry if things are not always respectful and right for all of you but if I can ever do anything for any of you just let me know. Thank you and God bless.
I just received a call from my sister in law about Bedford police officer Hill. (Her father is retired LEO). Officer Hill assisted in rescuing a kitty in distress near Mexican Inn. She placed a call to Bedford Police for assistance and he arrived promptly. The kitty was jammed up under a light pole near a service road with cars zipping by. Officer Hill assisted my sis n law and a woman employee from Mexican Inn to recover the kitty. It was not easy. The employee has now adopted the kitty.
