🚑 MEDCHECK vs. ER — KNOW WHERE TO GO

Hospital Emergency Departments are seeing high patient volumes. When possible, choosing the right level of care can help reduce overcrowding and keep emergency resources available for true emergencies.

🩺 MEDCHECK / URGENT CARE CAN OFTEN HANDLE:
✓ Colds, flu, fever & sore throats
✓ Ear and sinus infections
✓ UTIs
✓ Minor cuts & wounds
✓ Sprains, strains & minor injuries
✓ Some simple fractures
✓ Minor burns & rashes
✓ Mild vomiting or diarrhea
✓ Other non-life-threatening illnesses

⚠️ KNOW THEIR LIMITS

MedChecks are not mini Emergency Rooms.

Depending on the location, they may have limited:
• Imaging and laboratory testing
• Emergency medications and equipment
• Cardiac monitoring
• Ability to treat severe illness or trauma

They generally cannot provide hospital admission, emergency surgery, blood products, or the same level of advanced emergency care available in an ER.

If your condition is beyond their capabilities, you may still be sent or transferred to an Emergency Department.

🏥 GO TO THE ER FOR:
🚨 Chest pain / possible heart attack
🚨 Stroke symptoms
🚨 Severe difficulty breathing
🚨 Severe allergic reaction
🚨 Major trauma or serious injury
🚨 Uncontrolled bleeding
🚨 Severe burns
🚨 Seizures or loss of consciousness
🚨 Severe head injury
🚨 Serious mental health emergencies
🚨 Any potentially life- or limb-threatening condition

🚑 CALL 911 when someone is experiencing a potentially life-threatening emergency, may deteriorate rapidly, or cannot be safely transported.

Remember: Arriving by ambulance does not automatically move you to the front of the ER. Patients are prioritized based on medical severity.

If you aren’t sure whether something is an emergency, don’t delay care because you’re worried about overcrowding. When symptoms are severe, sudden, or potentially life-threatening, call 911.

Right patient. Right place. Right level of care.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — September 11, 2026

Twenty-five years ago, there were dinners that never happened.

There were front doors that never opened.

There were uniforms that were never worn again.

There were children waiting for a parent to come home, spouses waiting for a familiar voice, and families who had no idea that a goodbye earlier that day would be their last.

2,977 lives were lost on September 11, 2001.

Behind that number are 2,977 individual stories—people who were loved, needed, expected home, and deeply missed.

For those of us in EMS, we also remember the crews who began that morning doing the same thing first responders do every day: showing up when someone needed help.

They could not have known what would be asked of them.

They simply answered.

Twenty-five years later, their example still carries meaning for every person who chooses a life of service.

So today, Beech Grove EMS remembers the people behind the numbers, the families who have carried their absence for 25 years, and all those whose lives were forever changed that September morning.

A generation has passed. Their stories remain.

25 years ago tonight, thousands of people went to bed believing tomorrow would be just another Tuesday.

Passengers prepared for morning flights.
Thousands prepared for another day at work.
Firefighters rested before another shift.
Police officers prepared for another day of patrol.
EMTs and paramedics went to sleep expecting another day of answering calls.

None of them knew what September 11, 2001 would bring.

By the end of that morning, 2,977 innocent lives had been taken.

Among them were:

🇺🇸 2,753 people killed in New York
🇺🇸 184 people killed at the Pentagon
🇺🇸 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93

Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were 343 members of the FDNY and 71 law-enforcement officers in New York City who ran toward danger while thousands of others were trying desperately to escape it.

For those of us in EMS and public safety, September 11th is a powerful reminder of what it truly means to answer the call.

They didn’t know it would be their last shift.
Their last goodbye.
Their last morning with the people they loved.

Tonight, hold your family a little tighter. Tell the people you love what they mean to you. Appreciate the ordinary moments, the routine shifts, the drive home after work, and the privilege of waking up to another day.

Tomorrow, we remember 2,977 lives.

We honor the first responders who answered the call.

We remember the families whose lives changed forever.

And we honor all those who have continued to suffer—and those we have lost in the years since—from illnesses related to their service and exposure at Ground Zero.

25 years later, we remember.

We honor their service. We remember their sacrifice. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Today, September 9, we recognize National Emergency Services Day. 🚑🚒🚓📞

From the dispatchers who answer the first call, to law enforcement and firefighters who respond alongside us, to the EMTs and paramedics providing care when every second matters — emergency service takes a team.

We may wear different uniforms and serve different roles, but we share one mission: being there when our community needs us most.

Beech Grove EMS is proud to serve alongside the incredible men and women who answer the call every day.

To all emergency responders — thank you for showing up, serving your communities, and taking care of one another. ❤️💙

🚑 “Why did that ambulance suddenly turn off its lights and sirens?”

You may have seen an ambulance responding with lights and sirens, only to shut them off while still on the way to the call. No, we didn’t turn them on to get around traffic!

Sometimes, while we’re responding, another unit arrives on scene and determines additional responding units are no longer needed, there is no patient, or a closer ambulance takes the call. When that happens, we’re disregarded from the call.

Once we’re no longer responding to an emergency, there’s no reason to continue using lights and sirens. Emergency driving carries additional risk to both responders and the public, so we return to normal traffic as soon as an emergency response is no longer necessary.

So if you see an ambulance suddenly go from 🚨🚑💨 to just 🚑… chances are, another crew has the situation handled and we’ve been cleared from the call.

The emergency didn’t disappear — the right resources are already there.

Stay safe, and as always, please move over and give emergency vehicles room when you see lights and sirens! 🚑

🚑 “I don’t know what medications I take.”

We hear this more often than you might think.

Knowing what medications you take can give EMS important information about your medical history and help us make safer treatment decisions. Blood thinners are especially important for us to know about after a fall, head injury, or bleeding.

You don’t have to memorize everything! 💊

Keep an updated medication list in your wallet, purse, phone, or on your refrigerator with:
• Medication names and doses
• How often you take them
• Medication allergies
• Major medical conditions

If you become confused or unconscious during an emergency, that list can speak for you.

🚑 A few minutes of preparation today can make a big difference when every minute matters.

🚑 Lights & sirens in… normal drive out. Ever wonder why?

Getting there quickly matters—but getting everyone there safely matters too.

Once we arrive, assess our patient, and determine what they need, we decide how urgently we need to get to the hospital.

Sometimes lights and sirens are necessary. Sometimes the best thing you can hear from the back of an ambulance is… nothing at all. 🧡

A quiet ride doesn’t mean we aren’t taking you seriously. Sometimes it means you’re doing okay—and that’s exactly what we want.
