The tough part about having Habitat AmeriCorps members working alongside us is when their service terms end! Such is the case with our hardworking AmeriCorps member, Rene Njamnshi, who was a HUGE support to our Repair and Homeownership programs. Everyone has quizzed Rene on his unusual and fascinating background, so we thought we'd share some of it with you:

Originally from Cameroon, Rene and his family immigrated to the U.S. as permanent residents in late 2019. He graduated from The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University with a dual MA in Sustainable International Development, and MS in Global Health Policy and Management. He has a master’s in International Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University.

Rene's personal experiences contributed to his interest in reducing inequity in the housing sector. Two significant events impacted his choice to serve with Habitat AmeriCorps:

He recalls that, as a small boy visiting his maternal grandmother in a neighboring village in Cameroon, a leaking thatched roof woke them late one night. He remembers how they shifted their bed a couple of times and struggled to catch drips using pots and pans in different parts of the room.

Then, years later, he said it broke his heart to observe the housing challenges faced by artisanal miners he worked with in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Consequently, while studying at Brandeis University, Rene designed the Affordable Housing for Rural Africa (AHORA) project that won 3rd prize during the 2020 Heller Startup Challenge regarding innovative solutions to social injustices around the world.

It's no surprise that Rene's passion for providing decent, affordable housing for low-income people brought him to Habitat AmeriCorps. We thank you for your service, Rene, and please know that you'll be greatly missed!

Congrats to Donna K. and Jessica N., who each celebrate five years as Habitat homeowners this month! Do you know of someone who could relate to their stories (see below), and/or are interested in learning more about our Homeownership Program? Sign up thru our website to come to one of our orientations!

When Donna first applied to the Homeownership Program, she explained (in the bio she submitted to us) that she had to work on building up her credit, and learn to grocery shop and take care of bills (things her former husband used to do) after a bad divorce. She said, "I am hoping to be considered for a home through Habitat for Humanity because my income would probably not qualify me for a traditional loan. I do not need a big house; a two bedroom would be more than enough."

Jessica was a single mother pregnant with her second son when she applied to the Homeownership Program. She said, "My ultimate goal and dream has always been to own a house. My kids deserve the best and I want them to be proud of their mommy’s accomplishments. I also want them to have a stable, amazing, safe and secure home. My kids are my motivation for everything I do. Owning a home would truly be a dream come true."

We are extremely grateful for MyBGE ’s support in helping our community's low-income families in need of affordable homes. We recently received a $10,000 grant award for our Harford "Habi-Tech" program, giving STEM students an opportunity to learn and apply green homebuilding skills while making a positive impact in our community by expanding the pool of safe, decent, and affordable homes.

🆘❗In the past couple of weeks, we've only had nine volunteers who've come out to our Elkton build site, two of them Habitat homebuyers doing their required "sweat equity," and the remaining majority have been our longtime "core" volunteers. We really need additional volunteers to help get Felicia and her children into their future home.

✍️Sign up is through our website, and Michele and Ben discuss how easy it is to be a volunteer (and what we're looking for) in this short one-minute video. Please lend us a helping hand, and spread the word! 💪🔨🏡

Happy Team Thursday August "workiversaries" to the following staff members: Phil (19 years), Dave (8 years), Adam (7 years), Michele (1 year), and Roger (4 years)! They work to make the cost of home something we can all afford.

We believe no household should have to spend more than 30% of their income on a home.

“Families should not have to live in fear of choosing between paying for a roof over their head or paying for food or medicine or clothing for their kids,” says David M. Dworkin, president and CEO of the National Housing Conference, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that advocates for people of all income levels to live in safe, decent affordable homes.

Thank you to Carl and Lynn (at left), pictured with our Director of Development Ola Boswell, for your very creative donation idea! This generous couple (who have been faithful financial supporters of Habitat Susquehanna for many years) donated nine shout-out spots of radio airtime across three days in August on classical station WBJC (91.5 FM). What a great way to promote Habitat Susquehanna and help spread the word about our mission! 📻🎙️

It's National Senior Citizens Day! Did you know that by 2030, 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older? Yet, more than 19 million older adults are living in homes that are in disrepair or ill-equipped to safely meet their needs. In addition to building new houses, we also partner with older adults to make accessibility upgrades to their homes. These upgrades allow seniors to continue living in their homes and communities while maintaining their independence and quality of life to age in place. We know that aging in place extends longevity and quality of life. Older adults are mentally and physically healthier, feel safer at home, and engage with their family and friends more.

👏Thank you, thank you to the Habitat Bulle Rock Club for raising nearly $1400 selling pulled pork sandwich meals as a fundraiser for our mission! They are such an active group; we love them! 🏆 Special thanks to all the club members who donated supplies, drinks and chips to the sale, as well as to Kathy and Werner (shown in the large 📷 at left) who initiated the idea and smoked the meat! It just goes to show that you don't need to raise a hammer to help Habitat (although many of them HAVE volunteered at our build sites as well!).

$8,000-$9,000. That's how much money the Aberdeen ReStore's longtime volunteer, Rob Orndorf, raised each year for the ReStore through his metal recycling efforts -- except for last year. He calls that his "banner year" when he raised $15,000. And the amount of recyclable materials he stopped from going to a landfill last year? 19 tons. Rob is "retiring" from his volunteer duties at the end of this month. It's not a final farewell, but a "see you soon," as we bid goodbye to our Director of Homeowner Services, Yvette Valentin! (In the top row, she is pictured holding a framed collage of the 50 homeowners she impacted during her approx. eight years with us.) She brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the homeownership program. We are grateful that Yvette will continue to have involvement in our organization, even as she transitions to a part-time role. She will remain a key contributor to our mortgage origination, strategic planning and ReStore committees. She has always been a passionate and dedicated member of our team, and has a big ❤️ for our mission and vision. We wish her well in her future endeavors and offer her our deepest thanks for her numerous contributions to our nonprofit!

📣We have an URGENT request and we're hoping you can help us out! We are very short-handed volunteer-wise at our Habitat home build site in Elkton. We're looking for volunteers of all (or no) skill levels to help move Felicia and her three children (ages 13, 8 and 5) into this home as soon as we can. 💪🔨🏡

You may remember that it's the house that was built by the students of the Cecil County School of Technology (CCST), in partnership with Habitat Susquehanna. Once a CCST "Habi-Tech" home is transported to its final destination, Habitat volunteers finish the home.

Our Thursday Thanks go to the Rotary Club of Aberdeen for its $500 donation, which will pay for tool kits and cordless rechargeable work lights for eight future homeowners! Thank you, Aberdeen Rotary!

Our tradition is to place these donated items in the Habitat houses on a home dedication day. In addition to the ceremony being a time when the homebuyer gets to officially thank the community that helped make their home a possibility, they also get to take a tour of their new home, receive special housewarming gifts from donors, and know that this will be their "forever home" on settlement day. (Here are a few pics of past tool kits/lights gifts from donors, placed in various rooms of the homes.)

On their home dedication day, the eight future homeowners will receive:

🔨 A 201-piece household tool kit which contains a wooden handled hammer, measuring tape, long nose pliers, slip joint pliers, adjustable wrench, precision screwdrivers, bit driver, CRV bits, hex keys SAE and metric, plastic level, hacksaw and three extra saw blades, and 160 picture-hanging pieces -- all in a polyester bag.

🔦The ultra-bright cordless LED work light which has a built-in stand to work hands-free, a flip-up hook to hang it anywhere, and a powerful magnetic base that attaches to any metal surface.

08/02/2023

Ben Marsh has just finished two terms with us as a Habitat AmeriCorps member! He came to us (from his home in the midwest) as an AmeriCorps National Construction Crew Leader. Ben led groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers and homebuyer families in construction activities (bottom left pic). He often gave the site safety talks at the beginning of each build day. Whether he was on top of a roof (top right pic) or tilling the ground with a dingo (bottom right pic), his can-do attitude and hard-working ethic served him (and us) well! He instantly clicked with Habitat staff and volunteers, and the camaraderie shines through in these pictures.

During a series of video interviews we did to promote the AmeriCorps program, Ben said, "I chose AmeriCorps because I wanted to make a difference in the world, somewhere, somehow." We think he succeeded exceptionally well!

In partnership with local Habitat organizations, Habitat places Americorps members to serve in a variety of roles to increase Habitat's ability to build homes, engage communities, build capacity and increase productivity.

"It really brings out the best in people," Ben said about AmeriCorps. We thank you, Ben, for your service!

We are delighted to have been awarded a generous grant of $16,156.94 from the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) which will assist with home repairs for one rural low-income family, a Veteran and his wife, both of whom are seniors with disabilities in need of critical home repairs. This project will create a more accessible and energy efficient home for this Veteran family. These funds come to us through the 2023 HAC Affordable Housing for Rural Veterans Initiative which was made possible through HAC’s partnership with The Home Depot Foundation. Thank you so much, HAC!

Havre de Grace Blitz: A weekend of a blood (a little), sweat (a lot), and tears (a bunch)
It is always tough getting back to work after spending a weekend with the Crazies helping stir up some Habitat excitement. I am still riding the high from the blitz.
First, I want to thank Liz and Lilly for trusting us to help them build their home in this Crazy way. We will forever be within those walls. I want to thank the Susquehanna affiliate for all the work to put it together. I want to thank all the Crazies for continuing to reach out in such a powerful way and allowing me to be your fearless and senseless leader. Thank you guys for all you do to help others “Feel the Feeling” and continuing to change lives.
As always is the case there were plenty of moments that will remain in my heart and memory for years to come. Here are just a few-
****The smiles from Liz and Lilly
1. A Friday prep day that involved about 45 people
2. Wild downpour (or extremely high humidity as we call it on
Habitat sites) on Friday and no one flinched or left
3. The look in local construction superintendent Jeremy’s eyes
as the Craziness began
4. The heat
5. Executive Director Karen’s tears
6. The fantastic “do whatever it takes” staff
7. Crazies showing up with ear to ear grins on their faces
8.Larry being cuffed by the local police officer who stopped by
to help (Just for the record, cuffing Larry and keeping him
out of trouble really did help)
9.Special thanks to Coakley’s Pub, officially designated as
Pub of the Crazies Blitz Build
10. The Heat
11. Sharing the weekend with my wife, son, daughter-in-law,
sister, brother, brother-in-law, nieces
12. Dancing at the Pub on Saturday nite
13. Reconnecting with a high school friend who happened to
live not far from the Havre de Grace
14. A bunch of hard core Crazies who would not come off the
roof until it was complete (~7:00 PM)
15. The passion, compassion, and love that filled the air all
weekend
16. Did I mention the heat?
17. Tears all around as Liz and Lilly put the shutters and flag
on there home
18. People who converted to the wonderful affliction known as
Crazyism
19. Chuck, Larry, and Bob- enough said
20. Having Habitat author David Rubel, his wife, and son
again joining us
21. And what brings us back, “Feeling the Feeling”
I know many of you have additional memories that stand out. If so inclined, please share them on The Habitat For Humanity Road Trip Crazies page.
If you haven’t yet read David’s Habitat books, you might want to check them out.
If I Had A Hammer
The Carpenter’s Gift
In case you haven’t seen the numbers yet-
249 Total Volunteers
165 Local Construction Volunteers
23 Non-Construction Volunteers
61 Crazies
120 First Time Local Volunteers
That is pretty outrageous but the biggest numbers are these two. Because of your love and commitment to leaving the world better than you found it, 1 momma and 1 seven year old girl will now be able to buy a safe, dry, and affordable home. Thank you.
Peace my friends,
To5m (the 5 is still silent)
So update please. Did you finish house? Landscape? Inside? Amazed that many people working together.
I'm in awe. My heart is so incredibly full today! Thank you times a million to everyone who helped make this weekend happen. 💙Liz and Lily
Look at all the progress! Amazing.crazy wonderful.
Well I just registered as a volunteer. I encourage all my friends to volunteer for some sort of community service. My fellow commissioner and staff will serve on June 8, 2017 as part of the MAHRA and HOC PHA’s the Day of Service! I can build!!!!🤔💪🏨
