On August 27, 1776, the Continental Army fought the Battle of Long Island, its first major battle after independence was declared.

Maryland played a remarkable role that day. Soldiers from the 1st Maryland Regiment, remembered as the Maryland 400, held off a much larger British force during the American retreat. Their courage gave Washington’s army valuable time to escape and fight another day.

Their heroism helped inspire Maryland’s nickname: the Old Line State.

Join us Saturday, November 7, from 7–10 PM at Abingdon Library for an evening where history, imagination, and community come together at Harford County Public Library’s 22nd Annual Gala: A Winter’s Ball: Revolution in the Stacks*!
