I am so grateful they reached out. Helping children is one of the most rewarding things I do in my job. Boonefield Labradors Belchertown Police Department Harmony Acres Personalized Dog Training BARC, INC aka Belchertown Animal Relief Committee

This morning, members of our Child Protection Unit and Children's Advocacy Center of Hampshire County Child and Family Advocate Guadalupe Arevalo had the opportunity to spend some time with Comfort Dog Oliver from the Belchertown Police Department.

Comfort dogs like Oliver play an important role in helping children and families feel more at ease during what can often be difficult and emotional situations. 🐾

Happy 3rd Birthday to this handsome guy! I don’t even know where to start. 3 years of putting smiles on peoples faces and bringing happiness wherever we go. I literally can’t go anywhere without you and not have someone ask me ā€œwhere’s Oliver?ā€! Seeing the kids faces light up when you walk into a school, being out at community events and having everyone look for you and ask about you makes my heart so happy. You are the best copilot, coworker and buddy anyone could ask for. You continue to amaze me every day. Sometimes I ask so much of you and you are always willing to give 100%. I don’t remember what life was like without you. I sure am glad Boonefield Labradors was willing to give me and The Belchertown Police Department a chance to start this program. Oliver, you have been such an asset to our department and I love every day I get to be with you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has supported us and believed in us along the way from our amazing community and surrounding communities. I can’t wait to see what the next few years have in store for you. ā™„ļøšŸ¾

Happy Monday everyone! Yesterday I took my last 2 CGC tests and passed them. I now have all of my AKC certifications. I was tested on CGCA (Canine Good Citizen Advance) and the CGCU (Canine Good Citizen Urban). We were in downtown Amherst where it was so busy! So many other dogs, kids and adults greeting us, horns honking and sirens blaring. Talk about distractions 😬🤣 I had to walk by the restaurants and outside dining areas where the food smelled SO good (but I couldn’t have any!) I am so grateful for my trainer Denise at Harmony Acres Personalized Dog Training for helping me achieve these goals. What’s up next šŸ¤” stay tuned! šŸ’™šŸ¾

This is such a powerful message from my breeder. Sometimes people are disappointed or sad that I can’t interact with their dogs when I am working. I love other dogs and I love to play with them. I have plenty of time to do that when my working harness is off I promise! It’s not always easy, sometimes I get excited when I see dogs that I know or have never met before. But my mom helps me reign it in and reminds me we will have time to ā€œdebriefā€ when the role and responsibility is over. I am supposed to be focusing on the task at hand when that harness is on. I have trained and worked very hard to know the difference. So please, if you ever ask if your dog can meet me and my mom says ā€œno I’m sorry he can’t right now he’s workingā€ she’s not being rude, she’s helping me stay on task, focused and consistent. I love my job šŸ’™šŸ¾

I’ll be honest—this is something that’s been on my mind.

When I’m scrolling and see working dogs—especially comfort or facility dogs—running, wrestling, or engaging in dog-to-dog greetings in uniform, it gives me pause.

Not because dogs shouldn’t play.
They absolutely should.

But because of what that uniform is meant to represent.

For our dogs, the vest isn’t just a piece of gear.
It’s a signal. A cue. A clear line of expectation.

It tells the dog:
This is not the time to engage. This is the time to remain steady, neutral, and present.

That’s also why we don’t allow on-leash, in-passing greetings with other dogs—and why we guide our handlers to do the same.

Because once we start allowing it sometimes, we create confusion:
Should I stay neutral, or should I engage?

And dogs don’t live in the moment the way we do—they learn from patterns.

So when those patterns become inconsistent, we start to see it show up:
• in anticipation
• in distraction
• in subtle shifts that matter more than people realize

And here’s the part many people don’t see—

Our dogs are often at events, in shared spaces, and working alongside other dogs.

They see them.
They pass them.
They exist in close proximity.

And they remain neutral.

Not because they don’t notice—
but because they’ve been taught they don’t need to engage.

That level of steadiness doesn’t come from avoidance.
It comes from clarity.

There’s also a responsibility piece—especially in shared spaces.

Not every dog wants to say hi.
Not every handler is in a position to allow it.

So we keep it simple:

Give space. About 2 feet or more. No face-to-face greetings without invitation.

Respecting that space isn’t unfriendly—
it’s part of respecting the work.

Our dogs absolutely get to run, play, and just be dogs.
They have dog friends. They have off-duty time.

Just not while wearing the very thing that’s meant to define a different role.

Different programs will have different standards.
This is simply one of ours.

Because in the environments our dogs serve, clarity isn’t optional—it’s everything.
