Picking up after your pet is more than just good manners—it helps protect local water quality. 🐾

When pet waste is left on lawns, sidewalks, or other outdoor areas, rain can wash bacteria and excess nutrients into storm drains and nearby waterways. Do your part every walk: bag pet waste and dispose of it in the trash.

Small actions at home and around the community can make a big difference for cleaner rivers and streams.

The bridge at the entrance to Scarborough Brook Conservation Area has been reconstructed thanks to Zach Restucci and others from Troop 507 here in Belchertown. The Town of Belchertown was lucky to be the beneficiary of Zach's successful Eagle Scout project. He designed the new bridge himself, worked with us to get a wetland permit, fundraised, and managed the construction. We now have a bridge with fresh deck boards and a sturdy handrail for residents and users of the New England Trail to enjoy for years. Thank you Zach and congratulations on your successful Eagle Scout Project!

The Town of Belchertown is currently seeking to fill one full voting member vacancy and one associate member vacancy on the Conservation Commission. The Commission is a volunteer board that reviews projects that fall under jurisdiction of the Wetlands Protection Act and local Bylaw and the Stormwater Management Bylaw. The position requires attending meetings every second and fourth Monday of the month, a basic comprehension of the local, state, and federal wetlands regulations, and occasional site visits. Qualified candidates have also demonstrated an interest, expertise, or experience in environmental protection. Commissioners must also have a willingness to attend training sessions, gain the relevant knowledge in a timely fashion, remain current, and generally make the necessary time commitment. If interested, please send a letter of interest to the Conservation Department at [email protected]. Any questions call the office at 413-323-0405.

Belchertown has a new HousingTrust! 🏡

Town Meeting voters recently approved the Belchertown Affordable and Resilient Housing Trust, a new program designed to help current homeowners repair and improve the homes they already live in. The focus is on repairs that help homes hold up to extreme weather, especially in cases where existing programs like Mass Save don't provide coverage.

Take a look at the graphic below for a quick breakdown of what the Trust will and won't do.

Please note, the Trust is not currently accepting applications. Once it is open for applications a seperate posting will be made.

🚧 Keep soil where it belongs—on the job site, not in our waterways.

When exposed soil is left unprotected, rain can wash sediment into nearby storm drains. That sediment clouds streams, harms aquatic habitats, and carries pollutants that reduce water quality.

Whether you're a contractor, landscaper, or homeowner tackling a project, simple erosion control measures can make a big difference:

✔️ Install silt fence or other erosion controls.

✔️ Stabilize disturbed soil as soon as possible.

✔️ Keep soil and construction materials away from storm drains.

Protecting our waterways starts with keeping soil in its place. 🌱💧

🐾 Scoop the poop—every walk, every time.

Pet waste left on sidewalks, trails, parks, and lawns doesn’t just disappear. When it rains, bacteria and nutrients can wash into storm drains, rivers, and streams—polluting the waterways we all share.

Bag it, trash it, and do your part to help protect clean water in your community. 💧

Your streets. Your voice. Your community.

The Town of Belchertown invites you to the Complete Streets Public Engagement Meeting!

📅 Thursday, April 30, 2026 | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Belchertown Town Hall Auditorium, 2 Jabish Street

Join us as the Town and consulting firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin (VHB) review existing street conditions and identify opportunities to make Belchertown's streets safer and more accessible for everyone — whether you walk, bike, take transit, or drive.

Tables will be set up so residents can have real conversations about what matters most to you. This is your chance to shape the future of our streets and help identify priority projects for MassDOT Complete Streets funding.

All ages and abilities welcome. We hope to see you there!
