The USGS reported a 3.8 magnitude earthquake at 11:41 am.

City of Belen Secures $21 Million Water Trust Board Award for Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvement

The City of Belen is proud to announce that it has been approved for $21 million in Water Trust Board funding through the New Mexico Finance Authority for critical improvements to the City’s wastewater treatment plant.

This award represents a major milestone for Belen and brings the City to the finish line on a project that has been years in the making. The funding package includes a 90% grant in the amount of $18.9 million and a 10% loan in the amount of $2.1 million, allowing the City to move forward with long-needed rehabilitation and upgrades to its wastewater infrastructure.

The City has worked diligently to secure the funding needed for this essential project. Prior to this award, Belen received $2 million in New Mexico Capital Outlay funding, $1 million from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, as well as $1.2 million in Congressionally Directed Spending.

Wastewater infrastructure is one of the most important investments a community can make. These improvements to the facility will ensure that Belen’s wastewater treatment system remains reliable, sustainable, and prepared to support future growth while protecting the health, safety, and quality of life of residents.

“This is an incredible moment for the City of Belen,” said Mayor Robert Noblin “Our team has worked for years to identify funding and move this project forward, and this award allows us to make one of the most significant infrastructure investments our community has seen. These improvements are critical to supporting responsible growth and protecting the future of Belen.”

The City of Belen extends its appreciation to the Water Trust Board, the New Mexico Finance Authority, the New Mexico Environment Department, the New Mexico Legislature, New Mexico’s Congressional delegation, and all partners who have supported this project. With this funding, Belen is positioned to complete a major wastewater infrastructure project that will benefit the community for generations to come.

🌻 Exciting Things Are Growing at El Corazón de Belén! 🌻
We are thrilled to share an exciting update on the El Corazón de Belén Community Garden!

What began as a beautiful flower garden is evolving into something much bigger—a true community destination in the heart of downtown Belen.

Over the past several years, we've faced challenges and setbacks, but thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of a volunteer landscape contractor, we are moving forward with a renewed vision and a comprehensive redevelopment plan.

In the coming months, work will begin to:
🌱 Remove dead and overgrown vegetation
🌱 Eliminate invasive Bermuda grass
🌱 Relocate the existing storage building
🌱 Grade and prepare the site for redevelopment
🌱 Install an improved drip irrigation system
🌱 Replant flower beds and planter boxes
🌱 Create walking paths and gathering spaces
🌱 Add community benches throughout the garden
And perhaps most exciting of all...

🏡 A community gazebo is planned that will serve as a venue for educational presentations, gardening workshops, children's activities, small concerts, community gatherings, and special downtown events.

Our goal is to transform El Corazón de Belén into more than a garden. We envision a place where people can learn, gather, celebrate, relax, and connect with one another while enjoying a beautiful outdoor space.

This project is made possible through the partnership between the City of Belen and the Belen Historic Downtown Partnership, along with the support of volunteers who believe in creating something special for our community.

We look forward to sharing updates as the transformation progresses and invite everyone to follow along as we grow the future of El Corazón de Belén together.
